Joy Spencer is an artist and illustrator who has had Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) for almost three decades. She attended Syracuse University School of Art and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design. She started her cartoon blog, in 2012 as a vehicle to vent and express her own humorous, honest, and no-holds-barred observations of living and suffering with IBS. The blog has quickly developed a following of dedicated readers who also suffer from chronic illnesses. Through this memoir in comics, Joy Spencer takes the next step and tells the whole story of her experiences, in the hope that other sufferers will know they are not alone.

In that regard, my dream as a writer, at least with this book, would be to reach as many people who have a chronic condition as possible, and make them smile and/or wince in recognition. It's a good thing to know you are not alone, and in creating the comics that comprise my story, I always hoped there would be people who would get a sense of, "Yes, that's what I feel!". Moving forward, I'd love to create more personal observations with comics on other subjects, using a similar format.(less)

However, I was away from home for a few months, and read exclusively on my iPad. So, for travel or for areas that are not near a library, reading on a device is fine. But I was relieved to be home, visit my library and get my hands on some books! I read mostly at night before bed... that's my life-long habit (and pleasure).

This was a very well-written mystery/action/noir novel. I was hovering between rating it 3 and 4 stars, and will give it 3.5, as I thought it went on a bit too long. The caliber of writing never flagged, however, and I would like to read more by this ...more

The Hard Bounce by Todd Robinson
"There is a lot of good stuff here but the writing is just over the top with endless "noir" metaphors and comic book actions. It seems that on every page someone is slamming someone else into a wall and screaming at the top of their lungs. There ar..." Read more of this review »

With the abundance of very good reviews of this book, I am sorry to be in the minority. Even though I finished this overlong book about a missing child, I found the going rather tedious. I have read quite a few novels on this subject, and this was no ...more

I found this book to be well-written, engrossing, tense, and very evocative of the era in which it was set (late 1950's-early 1960's). There is also a very layered portrait of a marriage, specifically the marriage of Nat and Paul Collier. Paul is an ...more
