<about>I started my career as a storyteller in the first grade, though my teacher preferred the term "liar." Confused, I went on to become an auctioneer's assistant, carhop, billing clerk, motel maid, technical writer, knowledge management director, web usability analyst, and finally, novelist. So, you can get paid to make things up!

My first novel Blackbelly, published in 2005 by Bridge Works Publishing, is set in central Idaho where I spent much of my childhood. In 2006 my second novel Mineral Spirits was published, also by Bridge Works Publishing, and is set in remote Mineral County, Montana.

Blackbelly has earned starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews and Library Journal, and was named one of the top five novels of 2006 by the Portsmouth Harold. Mineral Spirits also received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews, and both novels were selected by the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association as "Best of the Northwest" titles.

My latest novel, Windless Summer, is now on sale.</about>

A father’s love. A shattering secret. A summer that will change lives forever.

In the town of Rocket, Washington—a summer playground for windsurfers and tourists—a windless summer ignites fear as businesses and residents move away. Rocket’s motel, run by a lonely widower named Tom Jemmet, is hard hit. And Tom has demons of his own: memories of a beautiful wife that still haunt him, and a troubled young daughter whose retreat into a silent world confounds her father and sparks whispers in town.

Swirling around Tom are lives much like his own, townspeople yearning for wind but also for hope, even love. Charlene, a mail clerk, helps care for Tom’s daughter while a secret gnaws at her heart...Lauren, the town vet, has fallen for Tom, who barely notices...and newspaper editor Hap is hatching a foolish plan to save his town.

That’s when a miracle—or something like it—strikes Tom’s run-down motel. Guests who stay in Room 6 begin experiencing sudden acts of fate, both terrible and great. But while tourists descend on Rocket and the the town shows new signs of life, the truth about Tom’s motel and the death of his wife—as well as the secret hopes and fears of everyone around him—are exposed in ways that are both surprising and inevitable...

In Mineral Spirits, Sheriff Kip Edelson investigates the story behind a woman's skeleton that a young boy stumbles across on a river bank. He gets a tip that her name was Chris and he knows her death was not accidental-but little else. As he traces Mineral County residents with similar names and seeks clues to who might have killed her and why, a story evolves that includes drug dealers, a shootout, an abandoned boy, and the sheriff's own marital strains.

Blackbelly is a contemporary western that suspensefully traces the consequences of a crime of bigotry. It is the story of an unjustly accused sheep rancher's struggle to reclaim his life, and that of a woman close to him, from perils imposed by a domineering father and the culture of a remote Idaho town.
