My pal Josip, a college professor and well-known writer, once told me that he loved to find wild mushrooms in the forest behind his house. In the spring, he’d go out every Saturday to forage and then cook them.

“How did you learn how to tell which mushrooms were safe? Did you take a class?”

“No. Why would you do that? I just eat them. One time half my body went numb.”
