About this author

J.M. Porup is a novelist and former Lonely Planet author. His first editor -- way back in 1996 -- called him a loose cannon. Ever since Porup has done his best to live up to that high standard. In 2012 he plans to release three novels, including an anti-American satire that mocks the so-called War On Terror.

What’s in a book cover? Everything. People judge a book by its cover — and they should. Hemingway once wrote, “It wasn’t by accident that the Gettysburg address was so short. The laws of prose writing are as immutable as those of flight, of mathematics, of physics.”

There are laws of marketing, too. Having read widely on the topic (I particularly recommend Barry Eisler’s essays on the topic, her...

"You are well aware that it is not numbers or strength that bring the victories in war. No, it is when one side goes against the enemy with the gods' gift of a stronger morale that their adversaries, as a rule, cannot withstand them. I have noticed this point too, my friends, that in soldiering the people whose one aim is to keep alive usually find a wretched and dishonorable death, while the people who, realizing that death is the common lot of all men, make it their endeavour to die with honour, somehow seem more often to reach old age and to have a happier life when they are alive. These are facts which you too should realize (our situation demands it) and should show that you yourselves are brave men and should call on the rest to do likewise."Xenophon

"Cressida: My lord, will you be true?
Troilus: Who, I? Alas, it is my vice, my fault:
Whiles others fish with craft for great opinion,
I with great truth catch mere simplicity;
Whilst some with cunning gild their copper crowns,
With truth and plainness I do wear mine bare.
Fear not my truth: the moral of my wit
Is "plain and true"; there's all the reach of it."
William Shakespeare
J.M. Porup added a quote

"I know not why any one but a schoolboy in his declamation should whine over the Commonwealth of Rome, which grew great only by the misery of the rest of mankind. The Romans, like others, as soon as they grew rich, grew corrupt; and in their corruption sold the lives and freedoms of themselves, and of one another."Samuel Johnson
