From the Internet to networks of friendship, disease transmission, and even terrorism, the concept--and the reality--of networks has come to pervade modern society. But what exactly is a network? What different types of networks are there? Why are they interesting, and what can they tell us? In recent years, scientists from a range of fields--including mathematics, physics, computer science, sociology, and biology--have been pursuing these questions and building a new "science of networks." This book brings together for the first time a set of seminal articles representing research from across these disciplines. It is an ideal sourcebook for the key research in this fast-growing field.

The book is organized into four sections, each preceded by an editors' introduction summarizing its contents and general theme. The first section sets the stage by discussing some of the historical antecedents of contemporary research in the area. From there the book moves to the empirical side of the science of networks before turning to the foundational modeling ideas that have been the focus of much subsequent activity. The book closes by taking the reader to the cutting edge of network science--the relationship between network structure and system dynamics. From network robustness to the spread of disease, this section offers a potpourri of topics on this rapidly expanding frontier of the new science.

The National Council of Churches established the Delta Ministry in 1964 to further the cause of civil rights in Mississippi--the southern state with the largest black population proportionately and the stiffest level of white resistance. At its height the Ministry, which was headquartered in Greenville, had the largest field staff of any civil rights organization in the South. Active for several years beyond its original ten-year mandate, the Ministry outlasted SNCC, CORE, and the SCLC in Mississippi, helping to fill the vacuums when these organizations fell apart or refocused their energies.
Mark Newman tells how the Delta Ministry conducted literacy, citizenship, and vocational training. He documents the Ministry's role in fostering the growth of Head Start and community-based health care and in widening the distribution of free surplus federal food and food stamps. Newman discusses, among other Ministry successes, the Delta Foundation, which created jobs by channeling grant money to small businesses that could not secure bank loans.
At the same time, Newman details the Ministry's problems from its chronic underfunding to its uneasy relationship with the Mississippi NAACP, which pursued movement objectives through less confrontational methods. Newman looks at such Ministry failures as the Freedomcrafts manufacturing cooperative, and at such mixed efforts as Freedom City, a collective agricultural and manufacturing community built by displaced agricultural workers.
Divine Agitators looks at many inadequately studied events across a time span that extends beyond the widely accepted end dates of the civil rights movement. It offers new insights, at the most local levels of the movement, into such issues as conflict within and between civil rights groups, the increasing subtlety of white resistance, the disengagement of the federal government, and the rise of Black Power.

Although much has been written about the "golden days of radio," Entrepreneurs of Profit and Pride is the first book to examine the black radio industry. This book traces the development of black radio programming which began when the concept of "black appeal" first occured to certain entrepreneurs, a concept that played a pivotal role in the rise of cultural pride and "soul." Through the case studies of three representative black radio stations, Newman reveals the evolution of programming practices dictated not only by pride but by profits gained through successful marketing. A unique feature of this book is the inclusion of business considerations into a cultural analysis of the medium. The book begins with a discussion of how poor communications to black audiences in early network broadcasting led to the creation of black-appeal narrowcasting. The author probes the patterns of development in black programming and assesses the impact of that programming on soul consciousness. In addition, the book discusses individuals in the history of black radio, marketing to a minority audience, and the role of media in society as a seller of products and culture.

This book provides an introduction to Monte Carlo simulations in classical statistical physics and is aimed both at students beginning work in the field and at more experienced researchers who wish to learn more about Monte Carlo methods. It includes methods for both equilibrium and out of equilibrium systems, and discusses in detail such common algorithms as the Metropolis and heat-bath algorithms, as well as more sophisticated ones such as continuous time Monte Carlo, cluster algorithms, multigrid methods, entropic sampling and simulated tempering. Data analysis techniques are also explained starting with straightforward measurement and error-estimation techniques and progressing to topics such as the single and multiple histogram methods and finite size scaling. The last few chapters of the book are devoted to implementation issues, including lattice representations, efficient implementation of data structures, multispin coding, parallelization of Monte Carlo algorithms, and random number generation. The book also includes example programs which show how to apply these techniques to a variety of well-known models.

Focusing on the eleven states of the old Confederacy, this work examines the evolution of Southern Baptists' attitudes toward African Americans during a tumultuous period of change in the United States. The author not only offers an in-depth analysis of Baptist institutions from the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and state conventions to colleges and churches, but also probes beyond these by examining the response of pastors and lay people to changing race relations. The SBC long held that legal segregation was in line with biblical teachings, but after the Supreme Court's 1954 "Brown vs Board of Education" decision in favour of desegregating public institutions, some Southern Baptists found an inconsistency in their basic beliefs. Newman identifies three major blocs of Baptist opinion about race relations: a hard-line segregationist minority that believed God had ordained slavery in the Bible; a more moderate majority that accepted the prevailing social order of racial segregation; and a progressive group of lay people, pastors and denominational leaders who criticized and ultimately rejected discrimination as contrary to biblical teachings. According to Newman, the efforts of the progressives to appeal to Baptists' primary commitments and the demise of de jure segregation caused many moderate and then hard-line segregationists to gradually relinquish their views, leading to the 1995 apology by the Southern Baptist Convention for its complicity in slavery and racism. Comparing Southern Baptists to other major white denominations, Newman concludes that lay Baptists differed little from other white southerners in their response to segregation.

This introduction to the Civil Rights Movement synthesizes its history from the 1930s to the 1980s, explaining its origins, development, and results as well as relevant historiographical debates. It provides a critical perspective on the movement, eschewing the celebratory tone that pervades much of the current literature and takes into account the African American community's wide diversity.

Mark Newman outlines the range of responses to the movement from the north to the south, examining the role of the federal government, the church, and organized labor, and assessing the impact of the Cold War. The book discusses local, regional, and national civil rights campaigns, the utility of non-violent direct action, and the resurgence of Black Nationalism. It examines the achievements and disintegration of the national civil rights coalition, the role of Martin Luther King Jr., the NAACP, and the contributions made by many otherwise ordinary men and women.
