About this author

I’m from England and I’m a veterinary surgeon working at the Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, one of the biggest animal hospitals in the world. If I had to sum up the best part of my career in one word it would be ‘unpredictable’ because what’s great about coming to work everyday is the certainty of surprise. It might be a Chihuahua or a Great Dane, a Maine Coon Cat or an iguana. It might be the heartache of saying goodbye to a best friend; it might be the elation of a surgical cure and a relationship to a true companion restored. It is all of this and more. What’s not to love! In my first book, Tell Me Where It Hurts I tried to capture the rush and the passion of modern veterinary medicine. In Love is the Best Medicine, I have focus ...more

Unfortunately events ruined my momentum in reading this book but it is still a wild addictive ride. I hate the Gone Girl comparison, but if you're forcing my hand, it's better.

I've been meaning to read Ms. Moyes for some time and, being English, relished this book from start to finish. Belly laughs and tears abound. Ms. Moyes knows exactly how to push the buttons and pull the strings. Loved it!

Sci-Fi, paranormal books are not my bag, however, the chapter involving Hugo Lamb in Cambridge was so spot on (I was a student there a few years earlier) I was totally hooked. Smart and very enjoyable.

More of Nick's books…
“It may be a cat, a bird, a ferret, or a guinea pig, but the chances are high that when someone close to you dies, a pet will be there to pick up the slack. Pets devour the loneliness. They give us purpose, responsibility, a reason for getting up in the morning, and a reason to look to the future. They ground us, help us escape the grief, make us laugh, and take full advantage of our weakness by exploiting our furniture, our beds, and our refrigerator. We wouldn't have it any other way. Pets are our seat belts on the emotional roller coaster of life--they can be trusted, they keep us safe, and they sure do smooth out the ride.”
Nick Trout, Tell Me Where It Hurts: A Day of Humor, Healing and Hope in My Life as an Animal Surgeon

“Over the years I've come to appreciate how animals enter our lives prepared to teach and far from being burdened by an inability to speak they have many different ways to communicate. It is up to us to listen more than hear, to look into more than past.”
Nick Trout, Love Is the Best Medicine: What Two Dogs Taught One Veterinarian about Hope, Humility, and Everyday Miracles

“Perhaps the greatest gift an animal has to offer is a permanent reminder of who we really are.”

“. . . mistakes are inevitable, but what is not, and what will set us apart, is our ability to learn from them”
