<about><![CDATA[Matthew Bruccoli was Professor of English at the University of South Carolina and a world-renowned expert on the life and works of F. Scott Fitzgerald.

After hearing a radio broadcast of Fitzgerald's [book: The Diamond as Big as the Ritz], he was hooked and immediately purchased a copy of [book: The Great Gatsby]. He has authored many books on Fitzgerald, including what is considered to be the best biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald, [book: Some Sort of Epic Grandeur: The Life of F. Scott Fitzgerald].

While studying Fitzgerald, Bruccoli collected a large amount of Fitzgerald memorabilia. The collection was eventually donated under a multiyear gift-purchase agreement to the University of South Carolina's Thomas Cooper library. The collection has an estimated worth of $2 million. When making the donation, Bruccoli stated "I couldn't find a coffin with bookshelves".

Bruccoli was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2008.
