One is a general malaise "I don' wanna" which is (in my case) usually brought on by having screwed up the book somewhere and having consequently run into a wall. In order to get past it I have to suck it up and go back and fix the problem, and then go forward from there.

The other kind is brought on by systemic stress, and it leaves writers in a place where they cannot get beyond the (illlness, financial difficulties, family dynamics, lawsuits; name your stress of choice, it'll apply somewhere) stress to work. This is much, much worse than "I screwed up and gotta fix it to go on," obviously, and it can take years to get through, much less recover from. For me personally, the Negotiator Trilogy *itself* was such a source of stress while writing that I still don't want to go back to that world to write full-length books; it was years before I was even willing to consider writing stories in it. So at best these things take time to work through, and at worst, writers never recover.(less)

Depends on where we draw genre lines. If we're talking urban fantasy--honestly, I've read practically no urban fantasy in the past decade, because it's been too much like work.

That said, I'm really enjoying DB Cole's Thieftaker books, which are urban fantasy set during the US Revolutionary War, and I recently read and just about died of squee over Beth Cato's upcoming CLOCKWORK DAGGER, which is steampunk not urban fantasy, properly, but ai, I loved it.

In broader fantasy, I just finished Rachel Aaron's Spirit series, which was absolutely terrific epic fantasy, Meg Cabot's take on Persephone, the Abandon trilogy, I've recently re-read Kim Stanley Robinson's brilliant Science in the Capital trilogy... I'm trying to get a bit of everything in these days!(less)

More books by C.E. Murphy…

I just finished A SONG FOR ARBONNE, which was May’s GGK Book Club book. (I’m working on catching up! I bet I’ll be almost caught up by the end of the year! :))

I’ve been kind of interested in re-reading SONG, because I’ve only read it once and it didn’t, er, sing to me, as it were. It’s the one GGK book I’ve never had any particular interest *in* re-reading, which, in the end, caused me to be in...

“In Ireland, you go to someone's house, and she asks you if you want a cup of tea. You say no, thank you, you're really just fine. She asks if you're sure. You say of course you're sure, really, you don't need a thing. Except they pronounce it ting. You don't need a ting. Well, she says then, I was going to get myself some anyway, so it would be no trouble. Ah, you say, well, if you were going to get yourself some, I wouldn't mind a spot of tea, at that, so long as it's no trouble and I can give you a hand in the kitchen. Then you go through the whole thing all over again until you both end up in the kitchen drinking tea and chatting.

In America, someone asks you if you want a cup of tea, you say no, and then you don't get any damned tea.

I liked the Irish way better.”
