About this author

Hey, folks! I just discovered that apparently I have given some very popular books single-star ratings--except I haven't. How do I know I haven't? Because I haven't read those books at all. So before you go getting all hacked off at me for trashing your favorites, know that I've written GoodReads to find out what's going on.

I return to my regularly scheduled profile:
Though I would love to join groups, I'm going to turn them all down. I just don't have the time to take part, so please don't be offended if I don't join your group or accept an invitation. I'm not snooty--I'm just up to my eyeballs in work and appearances!

Also, don't be alarmed by the number of books I've read. When I get bored, I go through the different lists and rediscover b...more

Did I mention I updated the Beyond Harry Potter list for the first time in three years?

Jessi James So excited to see our Alanna featured on the page of A Mighty Girl on Facebook the other day! I'm hoping for another generation of young women getting hooked on your amazing tales of strong heroines! ♥

message 81: by Sarah

Sarah My heart leapt to see you had added me as a friend on Goodreads! I read "Alanna" and the rest of the quartet nearly 15 years ago. It had an immense influence on my life and I've been hooked on all of your books ever since. I had read that you had been a social worker once. I'd love to hear from you if your experiences in the field has affected your writing or the topics of your writing. I have been a social worker for four years now. My job certainly has been interesting and mind-opening!

Will you be writing about the Tortall universe again? I'd love to see more on Keladry, Alanna, George, their twins, Daine, everyone! If not, I am sure I'll continue to enjoy what you do write. Your books are always a pleasure to read and I thank you for continuing to write them.

message 80: by Annie

Annie I loved your books as a little girl and I've really enjoyed revisiting them as an adult. Your Alana series changed how I read and what I go for in the library forever. Love them!!

message 78: by Tiara

Tiara Thank you so much for adding me back! You seriously are the reason when I was younger, that I HAD to completely tackle my middle school library. Just got back from the bookstore and bought two of your books. Books come and go, but your books I hold onto even for the nostalgia reasoning and I always come back to reading them every few years.

message 74: by Caity

Caity Ms. Pierce thank you so much for your books. I recommend them to anyone and everyone who will listen and even those who don't. I have yet to find another author who does such a good job of creating strong easily related to heroines. My copies of your books are all worn almost to death because I go back to re-read them so frequently and I don't think there will come a day when I am unwilling to read them again. Please keep writing and creating wonderful worlds and characters.

message 73: by Lauren (last edited Jul 16, 2012 09:44pm)

Lauren I want to say thank you, for writing your books. I absolutely love Emelan series and am looking forward to starting Tortall soon. I love your style of writing and how much detail you put into your characters. It's hard for me to pick a favorite sometimes, though I've always been partial to Tris and Daja. Not only that, but I made a friend because of your books as well as found two more friends who had a mutual love for your books

The one friend I met was when she was recommended The Magic Circle to mutual friend. He wanted another book with magic in it after Harry Potter and wanted one with a strong female presence.

Two days ago another friend in a book club asked for a recommendations, she's trying to read more books in English, when two more of my friends recommended your book series, the Tortall series and Trickster series; I was the third with your Emalan. Needless to say the three of us were thrilled to know others who like your books. My friends and I who recommended the series have been talking not stop since and have become closer because of it!

So thank you for your books. Please continue, all four of us love your books!

Ankita Thank you so much for accepting my friend request.

Adrienne The first time I read your books, I was still in elementary school. I'm 24 years old now. Since then, I've kept up with your release of new series and novels. I've reread each countless times and I always love the strength and uniqueness that each of your characters hold (though I think my favorite character might be Kel!). I've collected your books both in hardcopy and have finally purchased all of them for my kindle so I can take all of the books with me. I'm so excited to see that you are working on new material regarding Numair.

Thank you for giving such a gift through your writing as well as your unwavering push to add your voice and thoughts in real world issues !

message 69: by J.M.

J.M. Moris Thanks for accepting my friend request, Tamora! Your Immortals and Song of the Lioness quartets were perennial favorites to me as a young reader. Thank you for making such compelling, well written stories!

message 68: by Kat

Kat Thank you for accepting my friend request! I started reading the Song of the Lioness series a few weeks ago and we love it. I am happy to see a female heroine in a male-dominated genre too :)

message 67: by Maya

Maya Awesome seeing you again at Conbust, Tammy! One of your panels made me laugh so hard I cried, so thanks for that. :) On another note, I've been inspired by your talks and books again so here's hoping I can finally finish the novel I've been working on for the past 2 years and do something with it.

Much love!

Tamora Pierce Aerin wrote: "May I ask how you rate your books here on Goodreads? Are books that merit 5 stars ones you'd recommend others read, or will you give 5 stars to a well-written book that you personally did not like..."

Aerin, I would never give five or four stars to a book I personally didn't like. Three, yes--three is my grudging admission mark, or my "I liked this but not in a powerful way" mark. If it has four or five, though, I liked it a great deal, and if it has five, I was over the moon for it. If they're older books for younger readers, I may rate it for how I felt about it then, not now, but that's the only exception.

And I honestly don't expect people to like everything I do. Somethings I like very strange things, and you may have noticed I like a very wide range of books!

Jess Mrs. Pierce,

I've been wanting to thank you for years not only for your fabulous books, but also for my best friend. You see, when I started high school I was very shy and was recovering from many years of bullying at my grade school. One day I carried First Test into my 3rd period class, and a girl came up to me. Her first words to me were, "Oh My God! You love Tamora Pierce too??" Ten years later, we are still best friends and we have you to thank. Your books not only provide strong role models for young girls, but they also bring people together. I hope that your books will continue to introduce best friends for many years to come.

message 62: by Samiha

Samiha Ms. Pierce,

Hello! I'm one of your many, many teen fans and just thought I'd write this message. :) Thank you so much for accepting my friend request! I've been your fan for a few years, since I first read your Immortals series. I wasn't even a fantasy fan at the time but it sucked me in and I was absolutely intrigued. I couldn't get enough of those books. I then went on to read the Alanna series and realized I should have read those first... Haha. I loved those just as much, if not more!! You've inspired me so much, too. After reading those first few treasure troves, I was 100% inspired to write a fantasy novel of my own and, being a budding writer, I started! I'm now 11 chapters into it and I love to pick up one of your books if I get stuck on it. Writing is one of my very favorite pastimes, let me tell you. I feel it's a gateway to the imagination and that just opens so many doors! I love having the control and being able to think up my own characters and story-lines. Anyhow, I just wanted to thank you so much. :) It would mean so much if you replied! Even just to say "hello", because I know you're tremendously busy.

Thank you!
I look forward to more books from you. :)
Samiha Dib

Jennifer Hello,
I really enjoy your books!
I see that you have read many many books, and I was wondering what your top ten or so books that you ever read were.

Thanks!

message 59: by Rosie

Rosie i would just like to say your books are amazing and have been a huge part of my teenage years me my sister and mother have loved everyone we read they are amazing.

message 58: by Tria

Tria Thanks for adding me back. :) It's fun to see someone with more listed books-read than I have - though you've had just over twice as long to read 'em - but oh, I really need to catalogue all of mine. I inherited a lot from my mother, but since I moved to a city with a ton of second-hand bookshops, I've tripled my shelves from 1,000 to 3,000.

ᑕᗢᗝᒪḰᓮᖙᖇᗢჯ123 Cool YOU ARE AN AMAZING AUTHOR!
unfortunetly i read the protecter of the small first then alanna and now in the middle of the immortals...and not making any progress....

Michaela Anne Hello! I have a question for you, my favorite author. :) I recently was at one of your author appearances, where much of the time was spent by you answering questions from the audience of devoted fans. I had - still have- a question but during the event was too chicken to raise my hand and say it out loud.

(sorry for my long winded description)

Okay,so I am an aspiring writer. (Yes, how cringingly unoriginal,I know.) And of course, I'm going off to college in little less than a year - and I am wondering, what was your major in college?

I mean, I really want, more than anything, to just do what I love and get a degree in creative writing. However, this may not be good if I am a horrible author and/or need another job between working on books. (Or if I simply cannot get published) Thus, I am of course asking what you did as a major during your college years.

So yes. That is my question which I was too scared to ask earlier. Thanks & have a wonderful day! :)

message 49: by Mariela

Mariela I'm reading the Protector of the Small Series again, and I have to say this is my favorite series of them all. That's not to say that I don't love all the powerful women in all your stories. Which I do! But First Test was the first book I ever read by you. Kel was the one that lead me to read them all and I absolutely fell in love with them. I can say that reading them again now that I am older, gives me more an understanding in ife. I loved it in high school, and now college I have a better perspective on the struggles of life. I love Kel's discpline of herself and her determination above all. And I have been trying to applied that to my life. It's working so far. :)
Thank you for sharing your stories and proving that women can be more than what society has demanded from us. We can be great.

I don't want to freak you out or anything, but you, Tamora Pierce, glanced at my name(hopefully)! I feel so honored. You probably have no idea how many lives you have changed by writing these lovable intelligent heroines. I have no idea how you make them so real, but I'm glad you did. Thank you so much for opening my eyes to Alanna, Kel, Daine, Aly, and Beka. Can't wait for Mastiff!
