Martin Cruz Smith (né Martin William Smith), American novelist, has BA (Creative Writing) 1964 from U. of Pennsylvania, journalist 1965-69, and began fiction early 1970s. His first mystery features NY gypsy art dealer Roman Grey. Gypsy in Amber (1971), was nominated for an Edgar Award. Nightwing was his breakthrough novel and was made into a movie.

Smith is best known for Russian investigator Arkady Renko. In 1981, Gorky Park was called "thriller of the '80s" by Time Magazine, became a bestseller, and won Gold Dagger Award from the British Crime Writers' Association. Renko has appeared six times in: Polar Star, Red Square, Havana Bay, Wolves Eat Dogs, Stalin's Ghost, and Three Stations.
