about this author

I’m an award-winning crime novelist (aka Matt Rees) who lives in Jerusalem. As a journalist, I covered the Middle East for over a decade as Time magazine's Jerusalem bureau chief and Middle East correspondent for The Scotsman and Newsweek. I published a nonfiction account of Israeli and Palestinian society called Cain's Field: Faith, Fratricide, and Fear in the Middle East in 2004 (Free Press). My first crime novel, The Collaborator of Bethlehem (UK title The Bethlehem Murders), won the prestigious Crime Writers Association John Creasey New Blood Dagger in 2008, and has also been nominated for the Barry First Novel Award, the Macavity First Mystery Award, and the Quill Best Mystery Award. The New York Times called it “an astonishing fir...more

It includes this from veteran mystery columnist Oline H. Cogdill: "One of the main missions of crime novels is to paint a timely portrait of the issues in our times. 1526900 Thanks, Jessica. Sometimes I'm a little disturbed that events here seem to follow storylines I made up for my novels, with new and rather dreadful twists. I do have a third novel in the Omar Yussef series coming out on February 1 called "The Samaritan's Secret." It's set in Nablus ... but I hope that doesn't mean trouble is headed their way, Gaza-style. best, Matt

777369 I thought of you and the book I've read of yours with the situation in Gaza. It's awful.

I'm going to look for another of your books.
happy new year--

Nophoto-m-25x33 Hi Matt,
This is weird. I'm a crime writer who used to be a crime reporter and BRIEFLY did some news reporting in the Middle East! I'm currently working on an Iranian based thriller but if Chandler and Hammett are your thing you should check out my novel, HOLLYWWOD BOWL. E-mail me for details.
