Jan Needle has written more than forty novels, picture books and criticism. He got into it more by accident than anything, having started his working life as a journalist and discovering the joys of doodling in slack periods. His first short story was published at the age of 18, he moved to playwriting in his early twenties, then discovered novel writing in his early thirties. His first novel was Wild Wood, a retelling of The Wind in the Willows from the point of view of the "baddies," with Toad, Rat, Mole and Co as a sort of undeserving rural squirearchy. It was not published until about number five in his oeuvre, however, because of copyright considerations.
