This is a great question. I'm thinking of writing a blog post about it because I get asked this question a lot, so thank you for asking it!

When an author goes on tour, she does public events in various cities at bookstores, libraries, or sometimes high schools. It's kind of like when a musical band goes on tour and does concerts, only authors talk a bit about their books (and maybe the inspiration behind them), maybe read a chapter, take questions from the audience, and then the author signs everybody's books. And author events are free! The only thing I like to request of fans is that you buy at least one book from the bookstore where the event is being held, because they go through a lot of work to put the event together and they need to sell books in order to keep hosting these fun events.

Arrive a little early and buy your books before the event starts. That way you can get into the signing line right away when the official talk part is over. When it comes to meeting the author and getting your book signed, feel free to ask any questions you have that you didn't get a chance to ask during the event.

The whole event usually lasts at least one hour, and sometimes 2-3 hours, depending on how many people show up.

It's pretty informal, so don't worry about dressing up or getting stuck sitting there for hours if you have somewhere else to be--you can come and go if you need to. Just be aware that if you want your books signed, that usually happens at the end.

If you have any more questions about it, please ask! I'll gladly answer. Thanks and I'll see you soon!

“That was the goth stage, where I decided I'd never get the girl of my dreams because of my scars. Not to mention my hairstyle. (pause) But then she slammed a door handle into my gut. And when a girl does that to a boy, it means she likes him.”
Lisa McMann, Wake

“Cabel: Um, Janie?
Janie: Yesss, Cabel?
Cabel: I have another lie to confess.
Janie: Oh, dear. What is it?
Cabel: I do, actually, know what my GPA is.
Janie: And?
Cabel: And. I have a full-ride scholarship.
Cabel is pushed violently from the beanbag chair. And pounced upon. And told, repeatedly, what a bastard he is.
Janie is told that she will most certainly get a scholarship too, with her grades. Unless she plays hooky with drug dealers.”

“WAKE

Dealing with an alcoholic single mother and endless hours of working at Heather Nursing Home to raise money for college, high-school senior Janie Hannagan doesn’t need more problems. But inexplicably, since she was eight years old, she has been pulled in to people’s dreams, witnessing their recurring fears, fantasies and secrets. Through Miss Stubin at Heather Home, Janie discovers that she is a dream catcher with the ability to help others resolve their haunting dreams. After taking an interest in former bad boy Cabel, she must distinguish between the monster she sees in his nightmares and her romantic feelings for him. And when she learns more about Cabel’s covert identity, Janie just may be able to use her special dream powers to help solve crimes in a suspense-building ending with potential for a sequel. McMann lures teens in by piquing their interest in the mysteries of the unknown, and keeps them with quick-paced, gripping narration and supportive characters.”

message 22: by Angee (last edited Apr 05, 2009 04:20PM)

Angee Saxey Thanks again for your email with advice! By your taking time to respond to me, I went to Barnes & Noble and bought your books Wake and Fade. Well, for some unknown reason, every time I am at Barnes & Noble, people always randomly approach me and ask me for my recommendations for books. Why? I have no idea, but honestly the last three times I've been there I've been approached by someone I don't know asking me what books I like.
The reason I'm telling you this is because yesterday while I was picking up your book, again I was approached. The lady that came up to me saw your books in my hands and I told her of your kindness and the time that you took for me. She then (being touched also by your story of kindness) bought your books for herself and for her mother; it was her mother's birthday.

So, thank you! And I'm glad to have been able to refer your book!

Kendra /Books Complete Me Thanks for the add!! I LOVED Wake, and I am about to start reading Fade. I know I am going to love that too. Then I will just have to impatiently wait for Gone to come out...

message 19: by Shel

Shel I just wanted to say that I think you're an amazing author. I read soo many books and Wake & Fade both have spots in my top ten favorites. I sort my books on shelves by favorites, both of yours are on the top shelf. I lend my books to friends all the time, and whenever I lend them yours, they always say they loved it and it's one of their favorites, too. They always ask, "When's the next one coming out ?" And whe I tell them 2010, they groan and say it's too long. I agree ! Haha.

Keep writing and being amazing !
