Its fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure Bill Gates Good judgement is usually the result of experience. And experience is frequently the result of bad judgement. But to learn from the experience of others requires those who have the experience to share the knowledge with those who follow Barry LePatner
Many millions are wasted every year on building, extending and fixing information systems that either do not perform as expected, do not work at all or are abandoned before they are implemented. Details of the events that contribute are too often shrouded in non-disclosure contracts and confidentiality agreements, the causes of errors never to be aired and analysed by those in a position to prevent similar blunders in future. Newspaper reports of spectacular fiascos provide as much hard evidence as most are likely to hear, but what proportion of substandard and unwieldy IS developments come into being and continue in use simply because they are not so flawed as to be totally useless? The purpose of this book is to bring together material about a number of significant information systems which did not perform as originally envisaged and to provide a coherent account of the surrounding events. The author identifies major causal events and draws from them management lessons. In case after case critical factors point out strategic, organizational or resource problems rather than technical bugs. The value of comparing these woeful tales is to become aware of the way that organizations can become locked in a cycle of failure, condemned to repeat the mistakes of others. Read and be warned! Despite their diversity, there is a common thread running among these fascinating essays. There is an interest in the human soul as reflected in the archaic tales and myths of our ancestors, in the ways in which that soul might be developed or unfolded, and in what it is possible for that soul to do or accomplish spiritually. The study of heroic models of human, or praeter-human, behavior is essential to the understanding of a traditional people because such myths provide a bridge This collection is divided into four sections: Runic Studies, Old Norse Studies, Old English Studies and Middle High German Studies. between the archetypal realm of gods and goddesses and ordinary human beings. There has been a dramatic shift towards more open, democratized, forms of innovation that are driven by networks of individual users. Users are now visibly active within all stages of the innovation process and across many types of industrial output, and their influence is spreading across many sectors. They are actively engaged with firms in the co-creation of products and services, and firms can no longer control the innovation agenda. This developing phenomenon has large implications for our understanding of the management of innovation. Drawing on practice-based insights, together with theoretical approaches developed in Innovation Studies and Science and Technology Studies, this book brings together a collection of recent work that examines key aspects of this emerging new model of innovation, while highlighting exciting new ideas in this area. With content contributed by academics, practitioners and researchers, this book is a good reference source for academics and general public interested in the management and policy implications of user innovation.

Edited and Translated by James Chisolm and Stephen E. Flowers, This work contains every major reference to the practice of siedr in Old Norse literature, as well as some references to it from Latin and Arabic sources. The Source Book contains original text and translations. Never have all of the sources for practice of this kind of magic been gathered in an easily accessible form. For many, seid is the source of continuing fascination. For anyone really interested in this area of study it is necessary to read and study this book.
