About this author

I am a freelance journalist, editor, and part-time writing instructor at Mount Saint Vincent University. I enjoy all forms of creative and nonfiction writing. My children’s novel, Lunar Lifter, was published in 2012. My Fierce Short story, Some of My Parts, will be published in November 2013.

This little piggy went to market. The Halifax Forum Farmers' Market to be precise. And I liked it there so much I've been back every Saturday since – first as a shopper, then as a vendor. Since May 2, 2015 the Halifax Forum Farmers' Market has been happening each Saturday from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Bingo Hall. I feel like this book is much like Poehler herself and many of her characters, so if you're a fan (I am) you're bound to enjoy it. It's a random assortment of anecdotes, reflections and analysis. I'm tempted to call it light but that would be mislead ...more

Yes Please by Amy Poehler
"Another fun read from the subgenre I like to call, "Memoirs written by women who worked on SNL". It's overall a fun and humourous read. It may have needed some editing and could have lost a couple chapters but as a whole it's a memorable memoir. I..." Read more of this review »
Yes Please by Amy Poehler
"Yes Please is one of those books I like to call an “accidental read”. It only ended up on my to-read list after my boyfriend’s mother bought it for me for Christmas. I had never really seen any of Amy Poehler’s work other than the movies “Baby Mam..." Read more of this review »

Another sweeping, epic take from Allende, a masterful storyteller. I've read most of her books and felt this was one of her most ambitious in scope and in its examination of character. If you want to learn more about slavery, this is your book.

I enjoyed it but felt it was just a little too long. The relationship between the two main characters, who were at times close but never equals due to circumstance, was its strength. The cruelty of slave owners and the time period continues to be sho ...more

I adored the richness of the writing, the suspenseful plot, the non-linear storytelling (although admittedly this confused me at first) and the bravery of the main character, Marie Laure (and her relationships with her family). Young Werner was one o ...more

Quick and suspenseful, but it took me a while to distinguish between the characters in the boat. I did like the ambiguity of the main character. Some major details, e.g., how and why the boat crashed, would have increased my enjoyment of the story. S ...more
