Nach Jahren der Sehnsucht nach seiner Tintenwelt hat er endlich jemanden gefunden, der ihn zurücklesen kann. Doch dieser Mann, der sich Orpheus nennt, ist mit dem Schurken Basta im Bunde. Und so gelangt Staubfinger zwar zurück in die Tintenwelt -- aber sein treuer Begleiter Farid nicht. Farid weiß, dass in der Tintenwelt der Tod auf Staubfinger wartet. Und so geht er zu Meggie und bittet sie, ihn ebenfalls in die Tintenwelt zu lesen. Meggie lässt sich überreden, aber sie besteht darauf, mitzukommen. Obwohl sie weiß, dass sie sich damit auf ein ungewisses Schicksal einlässt -- und ihren Eltern das Herz bricht. <p> So findet Meggie sich in der vertrauten und zugleich völlig fremden Tintenwelt wieder. Einer Welt voller Magie, fantastischer Wesen, grausamer Tyrannen und vogelfreier Spielleute. Staubfinger hat dort seine geliebte Frau wiedergefunden -- aber kann er seinem vorbestimmten Schicksal entgehen? Farid und Meggie finden zwar den Schriftsteller, der die Tintenwelt erschaffen hat, doch seine halbherzigen Versuche, ihnen zu helfen, machen alles nur noch schlimmer. Sie wollen nicht getrennt werden, denn ihre Tante Esther möchte nur den kleinen niedlichen Bo aufnehmen. Umgehend beauftragt Tante Esther den besten Detektiv der Stadt, nach ihnen zu suchen. Zum Glück haben die beiden Jungs das praktische Mädchen Wespe und ihre drei Freunde getroffen. Alle vier hausen in einem alten, verlassenen Kino. Bei ihnen können Prosper und Bo zunächst unterschlüpfen.<p>  Anführer der Kinder ist Scipio, der Herr der Diebe, wie er sich selbst nennt. Wenn er abends unangekündigt ins Kino schneit, mit seiner schwarzen Maske und den hochhackigen Stiefeln, verbreitet er eine Menge Respekt. Kaum einer merkt, dass Scipio kaum älter als zwölf ist. Von seinen Beutezügen versorgt er die Kinder mit Waren, die diese zu guten Preisen wieder verkaufen. Doch die Herkunft Scipios ist geheimnisvoll.
