"History is written by the victors, so isn't it up to us to look deeper, think harder, and learn so we aren't doomed to repeat our mistakes? Obviously what happened to Chinese Americans in the past is a disgrace and an embarrassment, but there are things happening right now that recall those days." ...More

Lisa See Melanie,

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to write back. I've been having problems with my internet connection. I'm so glad you liked Dreams of Joy. I'm very proud of the ending. Happy at last!

I'm very close to finishing China Dolls, but it won't come out until next year.

Laura Lee Thanks for friending me. You are one of my fave authors, which I know I've already told you. Anyway, I can never wait for your next book to come out, then it does and I read it so fast and then I am waiting again for the next book! Too bad there isn't two of you so there would be twice as many books!

message 19: by Deborah

Deborah I'm hoping to come see you at Costco this Sunday! Can't wait to meet the author with such beautiful use of words!

message 18: by Portia

Portia S Hurray! You added me as a friend. I bought your "Shanghai Girls" on a perfect whim, without expectation. I stumbled upon another world and I loved it dearly. I've managed to procure for myself "Peony in Love" Thank you for writing, I am happy that you do all this research to ensure the authenticity. Thank you so much for your written word.

Laura Jane Lisa,
Just to let you know that I LOVED "Dreams of Joy." As always, I learned so much that led to further research by me, and the story itself was unforgettable. Thank you for enriching my life.
Laura Jane Kuncaitis

Elizabeth Lisa you were wonderful at Third Place in Seattle. I sat in the front row with your Mother's book on my lap with Lisa 's baby pictures. I was so inspired to hear of your research too.
And all the way home my friends and I tried to think up white food for the wedding.
Look forward to the movie.
Elizabeth (Betsy)

Sarah Jacquie Hi Lisa! I came to your talk and signing at Vromans - I'm the shy girl with ever changing hair (it was blonde and pink when I saw you). I just finishes Dreams of Joy, which Im so thankful for! It was so moving but not only did your characters make it moving, but the tribute you created is so much bigger than I anticipated. I spoke to my parents about The Great Leap Forward... never heard of it, along with others. I knew some, but not to the mindblowing extent I know you dug deep to tell. You've given people their voices during a time when so much was hidden or forgotten. I think you've created more than a book, but a token of reflection, remeberence, and hope. I think all who suffered and perished would be pleased you passed on their story and I hope it brings them peace to be remebered. Take care and thank you for the photo!!!

message 14: by Sandy

Sandy Parsons I'm so excited to see that Dreams of Joy is a sequel to Shanghai Girls! I loved the book and couldn't believe that it ended so abruptly, and the jacket didn't say anything about it being a series or if there was an upcoming sequel (and I looked, hard). I'm looking forward to reading it! Thank you for writing such compelling stories.

message 13: by Melanie

Melanie Hi Lisa...I wanted to let you know that I just finished On Golden Mountain and I love it! It was so well written and interesting...I couldn't put it down. I look forward to reading Dreams of Joy!

message 12: by Lindsey

Lindsey Thank you for adding me! I just LOVE your books!! Snowflower is one of my all-time favorites!! I was so giddy when I recently found out you were releasing a new book. I cannot wait for Dreams of Joy!

message 11: by Sarah

Sarah Jacquie WHAT!!! You've got a new book?! I was browsing giveaways and my heart dropped with excitement! eeeeek! I can't wait =) I still have all the ones you've signed above my bed, nearby. The boyfriend is NOT allowed to touch them now... ever (I was embarrassed to bring you a copy of Peony in Love to sign with a page loose and his footprint on it... though I doubt you remember but you were happy to see how worn it was! haha)

message 10: by Elmar

Elmar Now I've read the German translation of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and I really liked to learn a lot about this 19th century everyday life in China. Very nice!

message 9: by Sarah

Sarah Jacquie Hi! I finally got my copy of On Gold Mountain -- I held out for a while in order to get the hard cover edition. AMAZING! I'm going to dig into right now! =) Now I'm just trying to make myself go slow in order to savor it and hope more is on the way! Thank you again for everything!

message 8: by Maria

Maria Hi Lisa, A few friends and I from my book club will be at the luncheon tomorrow in San Diego. Look forward to possibly meeting you!

Angela Lisa: I was at your your reading today at Book Passage in Corte Madera, CA. It was very moving to hear about your family history and how you want to keep it alive in your stories. I have often wished that I had done more to know and keep the stories of my family as I have lost two grandparents and my father in the last three years. I look forward to reading Shanghai Girls next!

message 6: by Sarah
