About this author

Hella S. Haasse (b. 1918) was born in Batavia, modern-day Jakarta. She moved to the Netherlands after secondary school. In 1945 she debuted with a collection of poems, entitled Stroomversnelling (Momentum). She made her name three years later with the novella given out to mark the Dutch Book Week, Oeroeg. As with much of her work, this tale of the friendship between a Dutch and an Indonesian boy has gained the status of a classic in the Netherlands. Titles such as Het woud der verwachting (In a Dark Wood Wandering, 1949), Een nieuwer testament (Threshold of Fire, 1966) and Mevrouw Bentinck of Onverenigbaarheid van karakter (Mrs Bentinck or Irreconcilable in Character, 1978) have been greatly enjoyed by several generations.

“A person can carry his own persecutor, his own prison, about with him, Monseigneur. He can - as you know - die of thirst even when he has the clearest water within his reach. To be free...not to be free...it is all relative. No one has to drag along more ballast than he wants to and he who allows himself to be bound is a fool. The biggest fools are those who wear shackles of cobwebs and believe themselves to be helpless.”
Hella S. Haasse

“Men kan nooit werkelijk een plek-van-vroeger terug vinden, of een voorbije staat van zijn opnieuw beleven. Er is ooit een toestand van volmaakt geluk geweest die men in de loop van de tijd onophoudelijk verliest, vergeet. Toch blijft men geloveen dat die ergens in het verleden verzonken is en hervonden kan worden.”
Hella S. Haasse, Berichten Van Het Blauwe Huis

“Now he was singed by pain. When he finally opened his eyes he saw, at the end of the narrow green path, dazzlingly bright light. There she is, he thought breathlessly, there she is. With a shout of joy and deliverance he plunged forward to meet the light.”
Hella S. Haasse, In a Dark Wood Wandering: A Novel of the Middle Ages
