These books started out unrelated, but they're very much of a piece thematically, all about finding love in the aftermath of terrible trauma (or right in the middle of it, in the second book) and overcoming great odds to earn greater happiness. The past never goes away, but they learn to live with it and to find joy in the present. I started reading Stephen King as a young teenager and always loved the way he built his own universe, linking characters, events and places from one book to another, so it's neat to start doing that myself and pay a little tribute to someone who taught me a lot about writing. And I've discovered how much fun you can have with a flowchart, which is somewhere in the top ten nerdiest things I've ever said, hahaha. (less)
