About this author

Former stateleader and military commander of Cuba.

He was arrested in 1953 when he attacked a military barack with his men. He was released by a general pardon in 1955. After the pardon he fled Cuba.

In 1956 he returned to Cuba and after a first armed attack in Oriente. They went into the mountains to wage a guerilla war. Which led in 1959 to the fall of Batista. After the revolution he became the president and military chief of Cuba, untill he gave over the power to his brother and fellow veteran Raul.
