A "mews" is a row of houses either built from former horse stables, or built to look as if they were. Always nice to learn a new word.

The Mews murder is just one out of four in this Hercule Poirot collection. All the mysteries seem to either be very

Anabasis by Xenophon
"Anabasis is a Greek word for 'marching up' that has become synonymous with military retreat. Although it's a cracking tale of leadership and perseverance in the face of adversity, it's well worth the read for the sheer wealth of information on anc..." Read more of this review »

This is a funny kind of history, from 400 or so BC, in which the historian is writing about himself in the third person. Xenophon is both documenting and leading the march, which begins at one ancient spot in the Middle East, winds around in a circle ...more

“I decided it is better to scream. Silence is the real crime against humanity.”
Nadezhda Mandelstam, Hope Against Hope

“If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”
Abigail Adams, The Letters of John and Abigail Adams

Hermann Hesse
“If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us.”
Hermann Hesse, Demian. Die Geschichte von Emil Sinclairs Jugend

James Baldwin
“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.”
James Baldwin

Gary Provost
“This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals–sounds that say listen to this, it is important.”
