We didn’t talk anymore at dinner, and Hunter Gates didn’t come up again for the rest of the summer. But my time with him only increased. Enjoyed it, until I was exhausted. Got better at running routes. Mr. Gates would show me how to plant my foot (research wide receiver techniques). Weirdly, I was getting better at better at football, which made them want to pass it to me. And Mr. Gates gave m... Read more of this blog post »

I liked this one a lot--one of my favorite Trollope novels, and he's one of my favorite writers. Debt, ambition, class distinctions, women's rights--lots to enjoy and very few sappy passages with perfect female characters.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark
Interesting book, and a movie that does it justice as well. Odd jumping in time forward. We learn that characters will later die in fires, marry, etc. Makes one realize the disconnection between teen years and adult life, and gives some pause about t...more

" Gah, I suffered from the worst malady a reader can have while making my way through the audio version of this - disenchantment. I've read too many other books on the subject, and while I praise deGrasse Tyson as both a teacher and a storyteller of... " Read more of this review »

Death by Black Hole by Neil deGrasse Tyson
I'm usually a sucker for popular science. I read away, get fascinated, think I understand, and then promptly forget it all, especially if it involves physics. This one left me cold, though. There's something smirky about the writing. It's possible th...more
Carl is on page 40 of 150 of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie: I remember the movie fondly, and so far the book does not disappoint, though Spark has an odd way of jumping forward in time to tell us, among other things, that one of Miss Brodie's girls burned to death years later in an apt. fire, or that another is a nun. Certainly unconventional, but quirky in an interesting way.

The Demon Under the Microscope by Thomas Hager
Excellent popular science history. Sulfa drugs, corporate greed, professional rivalries/jealousies, Hitler.

“Games are lost and won in your mind as much as they are on the field.”
Carl Deuker, Gym Candy

“There was no anger in his voice, no disappointment even. It was as if he'd given up on me. He pulled his keys out of his pocket. "I should be going now. Merry Christmas, Nick”
Carl Deuker, Night Hoops

“I heard Coach Downs never started freshman," he told us. "Well that's not how it is with me. I play the best players, period. If you're a junior with three letters on your jacket, and you shave twice a day, and some smooth-faced freshman whips your ass in practice, then your collecting splinters while he's playing. Understood?
