About this author

Lynn Blackmar is a graduate of a small college in Virginia and a former education writer. She lives in Atlanta with three cats and a two-foot koi, where she enjoys video games, tabletop gaming, ethnic restaurants, and siege weapons.

The Misfit Spies is the first action-adventure fiction series written by Blackmar. Book one, Surfer Girl, was released on Amazon Kindle and paperback. Rebel, book two of the Misfit Spies series, will be released in January of 2013, and Catalyst will be released in early 2013.

Misfit, the free prequel short story about the Misfit Spies series, is available in full here on Goodreads, also on Amazon, Smashwords, and iTunes.

I am working on the editing for Rebel, and I thought I would share with you an excerpt for #FridaySnippets, along with a peek at the new cover. Rebel is from Nate’s point of view, if you read the first novel. This excerpt doesn’t contain any spoilers if you’ve read the first book, and really doesn’t have anything spoilerish if you did not.

“Being shaken to death by a Hawaiian tourist look-alike was not how Arena imagined her death.”
Lynn Blackmar

“Being a spy was something like standing on the south shore fending off a hurricane with a $2 poncho and an umbrella.”
Lynn Blackmar

“People who are different are considered ineffective. People who can’t hide their shortcomings are not considered a threat. A lot of spies rely on being unobtrusive, but we flat out flaunt the fact that we’re different, and those we try to get information from put us on an even lower level than the ones they don’t notice. They don’t believe we’re even capable of being a threat, and they misstep more than they might with someone they simply don’t know.”
Lynn Blackmar

“Actually, [Wax] said, we came here because we needed someplace safe to think for a few hours."
Ranette: "Your mansion isn't safe?"
Wax: "My butler failed to poison me, then tried to shoot me, then set off an explosive in my study"
Ranette: "Huh.... You need to screen these people better, Wax.”
Brandon Sanderson, The Alloy of Law

“When the time came to leap in faith, whether you had your eyes open or closed or screamed all the way down or not made no practical difference.”
Lois McMaster Bujold, The Warrior's Apprentice

“Your Royal Bloody Pain in My Back,

We're bloody waiting here to talk to you, and we're getting angry perturbed. (That means angry.) Thom says that you're a queen now, but I figure that changes nothing, sense you acted like a queen all the time anyway. Don't forget that I carried halled your pretty little backside out of a hole in Tear, but you acted like a queen then, so I guess I don't know why I'm surprised now that you act like one when you really are a queen.

So I'm thinking I should treat you like a bloody Queen and send you a bloody letter and all, speaking with high talk and getting your attention. I even used my ring as a signet, like it was paper proper. So here my formal salutation. So BLOODY STOP TURNING ME AWAY so we can talk,. I need your bellfounders. It's bloody important.

--Mat

p.s. Salutation means greeting.

p.p.s. Don't mind the scratched out words and bad spellings. I was going to rewrite this letter, but Thom is laffing so hard at me that I want to be done.

p.p.s. Don't mind me calling your backside pretty. I hardly ever spent any time looking at it, as I've an awareness that you'd pull my eyes out if you saw me. Besides, I'm married now, so that all doesn't matter.”
Robert Jordan

“I hope your bacon burns.”
Diana Wynne Jones, Howl's Moving Castle

“A man was attacking me with a wet handkerchief.”
Gail Carriger, Soulless
