About this author

Karen Mead (1982-) was born on Long Island, New York and still lives there because she's too lazy to move. As a journalist/editor, Karen lives the double life of writer by day...writer by night. Okay, so maybe it's not much of a double life. When not writing for work or for fun, Karen also enjoys reading, drawing, playing games, playing with her My Little Ponies (which she liked BEFORE it was cool) and watching anime.

Random Acts of Sorcery, Book 3 of The Familiar Series, is coming along nicely, I think. It's coming out different than I anticipated, but I think that's good; it means the characters are doing their own thing instead of letting me check the obvious "hrrrm, this should probably happen in the next book," boxes.

TPWBM came out in June 2012 and SOW came out in July of 2013, so I'd like to have this... Read more of this blog post »

A very interesting book, but I can see why the reviews are somewhat mixed here. I imagine that most readers attracted to a book like this are interested in video games, and it's only maybe 10% about video games; it's really about the executives at th...more

Very interesting, but perhaps too ambitious for its own good. Winchester attempts to cover the entire history of the Atlantic Ocean including its geological, political, and commercial history, and obviously, that's a lot of subject matter for just on...more

I hope my local library has part II, because as thick as this book is, I felt kind of unfulfilled when I came to the end and ran out out of proper Du Bois mayhem.

Fascinating biography of a real social justice pioneer, but keep in mind that you will p...more
Karen Mead is on page 40 of 735 of W.E.B. Du Bois: Letters of the Century: America 1900-1999, which I'm slowly reading in the background as I go through other books, said that Du Bois was born a slave. According to this book, that's completely false; he was born to a free back family in the North, and neither his mother or father were ever slaves either. Surprised that Letters has such a huge error, considering the research involved.

Through no fault of Rachel Carson, I was expecting something different from this book. Based on its reputation, I was expecting a collection of lyrical essays on the sheer beauty of nature, encouraging conservation by virtue of illustrating what grea...more
