About this author

Tom Gething received a B.A. in English literature from the University of Arizona in 1975. He spent a career in international business before pursuing fiction writing in earnest. His stories have appeared in The Soundings Review, The Barcelona Review, and other publications. Under a False Flag is his first novel. Though primarily based on historical research, it builds on his experience living, working and traveling in Latin America. Tom lives with his wife and a black Labrador retriever in the Seattle area.

This year we branched out from the beautiful Pacific Northwest and travelled down to the Sierra Nevada. None of us had hiked there before, and we’d heard great things about it. We selected a 60-mile loop that took us onto a section of the John Muir Trail, which stretches 21...

“What we have forgotten is that thoughts and words are conventions, and that it is fatal to take conventions too seriously. A convention is a social convenience, as, for example, money ... but it is absurd to take money too seriously, to confuse it with real wealth ... In somewhat the same way, thoughts, ideas and words are "coins" for real things.”
Alan Wilson Watts, The Wisdom of Insecurity: A Message for an Age of Anxiety

“Artists are dishonest creatures really. They foist their version of reality upon us while making it all up. Writers, painters, musicians, auteurs—they’re all the same.”
Tom Gething from "Sabotage"

“A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say.”
Italo Calvino, The Uses of Literature

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.”
J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

Kris Thanks so much for the friend request, Tom! I just had a wonderful time browsing through your book shelves. I see many favorites, as well as aspirational favorites (or favorites-in-waiting) on them. And any fan of Siegfried Sassoon is a friend of mine! :)

Nice to meet you, by the way."
