I can't remember a busier stretch than October and November were for me. Several deadlines, trips, houseguests, and puppysitting. I'll start with what I've been reading, which is easy enough to recount:

The Inspector Rutledge series, by Charles Todd. (adult historical mysteries, from the library) I've read all of them, starting with A Test of Wills through six other titles to the most recent A Long Shadow. I love the tec--a World War I vet haunted by a Scots soldier who died under his command ...

The last few weeks have been busy beyond words, and I have had to face reality: I will never catch up blogwise. Ergo, a brief list which simply will not do justice to the events, but is better than nothing?

Working backwards:

--Lunch in Niagara Falls, New York, at the New York Library Association annual conference, to accept the Empire State Award for my body of work. What a tremendous honor! A thousand thanks to the Youth Services Section and the award committee, with special thanks to Charlot...

Every year, author Robin Pulver invites a group of children's authors/illustrators to her lakeside home for the day. And every year, we have a perfect day. This year, it started out glum and rainy, so we visited indoors for a while, then went to lunch. We came back to glorious sunshine and sat in the lovely garden for the rest of that golden afternoon. Some of us swam or took a boat ride (thank you, Don!) or did both. Like I said, a perfect day.

Top trio, from left: Marsha Hayles, me, Ellen Stoll

Those were my two most recent destinations--a week-long trip, and a great one. In Chicago, I met with two librarians who will be hosting me at their schools--Monika Schroder, from New Dehli, India (!!), and Kirk Palmer, from Singapore (!!). I learned to my delight that Monika is also the author of a middle-grade novel, THE DOG IN THE WOOD, and has another book forthcoming. Then I got to attend the Newbery-Caldecott banquet, sitting with my Clarion peeps, poet Laura Purdie Salas, and children's l
