About this author

Edmund S. Morgan is Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University and one of America's leading historians. He has written more than a dozen books about early American history.

His American Slavery, American Freedom (1975) won him the Society of American Historians' Francis Parkman Prize, the Southern Historical Association's Charles S. Sydnor Prize, and the American Historical Association's Albert J. Beveridge Award. He won the 1989 Bancroft Prize in American History for Inventing the People: The Rise of Popular Sovereignty in England and America .
