Thanks for the friend request. I didn't mention that Space Trilogy is in my top ten books of all time, too. [I cheated by lumping them all together as one book. ;)] I saw you mention Out of the Silent Planet on your blog.

Actually I didn't like the series compared to the book, though I only saw a bit of the first episode. I was very disappointed that when ..."Well, it certainly didn't look like what I envisioned (especially the Hall of Bright Carvings), but I thought Steerpike was pretty good, and Swelter also. I didn't care for the Duke, the Duchess, or the Doctor, but Priscilla was good. These things never really match imagination, but my expectations were so low (and I was so pleased that someone had even tried) that I was satisfied. Somewhat like with Lord of the Rings - yes, they screwed some things up (Helm's Deep, no Tom Bombadil), but they got a surprising amount right. In Gormenghast, I thought lots of the surface was wrong, but the feeling was pretty close.
B. said: "Gormenghast! Also a surprisingly good BBC series"Actually I didn't like the series compared to the book, though I only saw a bit of the first episode. I was very disappointed that when they visualized the decrepit, decaying castle, they ended up doing it all in pretty, bright colors as if it were Narnia.
Since Peake was a painter and always described the color, feel, and even texture of his setting, I had a strong impression of it, and the series did not seem to match up. Nor did I think Rhys Meyers was quite unhinged and menacing enough to capture Steerpike.
