“My parents stood still. It was like we were on two separate islands. Mom and Dad were on one, and I was on the other. And the ocean between us was the symbol of truth. The thing representing our truce.”
Jenelle Jack Pierre, Before I Breathe

“Ariya was tall and fine-boned, with large doe-eyes framed by long lashes. She moved about the one-story house with a self-possessed grace in her purple dress. We thought she would make a good model. She could sell anything but perfume, because she always had a smell: parsley, cilantro, chicken, goat, sour sop, shop cheese.”
Jenelle Jack Pierre, Someone Else, Somewhere Else

“I moved to her side and we stood, absorbing the moment, gazing at the street. A puddle of water showed a reflection of an oddly barren tree. A car in the outer lane drew closer, then switched lanes. It sped pass the puddle, sending ripples through the mirrored tree branches.”
Jenelle Jack Pierre, A Mural of Hands

“Stop wearing your wishbone where your backbone ought to be.”
Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

“The notice informed them that it was a temporary matter: for five days their electricity would be cut off for one hour, beginning at eight P.M.”
Jhumpa Lahiri

“To be wronged is nothing, unless you continue to remember it.”
Confucius

“It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations.”
Winston Churchill

“But after a certain point in a marriage, you stopped having a certain kind of fight, Olive thought, because when the years behind you were more than the years in front of you, things were different.”
Elizabeth Strout, Olive Kitteridge
