And here is the actual link:

So, if you didn't take advantage before, I urge you to do so now. It's good storytelling.

April 17, 2012

"When Good Fortunes Go Bad" is the working title for my story of the man who takes his fortune cookies too seriously. Depending on comments from my writer's workshop, I may leave it at that. (That's my way of saying that if nobody at the workshop has a better idea, this is it.)

This is not bad, as titles go. It's descriptive, conveys a sense of the story's premise and even hints at the genre - horror. Certainly much better than the original working title of my novel - Griffin's Rip. Sounds like fantasy, right? Actually, it's hard science fiction, hence the change.

I usually wait until I see how the story is playing out before slapping a title on it. That way, I have some idea what I need the title to say about the story. In this case, I knew the story would be much longer than my usual flash fiction and that I wouldn't be able to finish it overnight, like usual. To keep track of the story in my files, I had to title it.

So far I am finding that the title is in some respects driving the story forward. In other words, the story is growing along the lines suggested by the title. Which show just how powerful the right title - or the wrong one - can be.

As for the story itself, it currently sits at 11 pages and approximately 6,741 words, making it already over twelve-hundred words longer than my current longest story and people have yet to begin dying. This could get to be quite long....

April 16, 2012

... for I have lazed. It's been seven days since my last post.

Well, I have not ACTUALLY been lazing about. I have been working and making money, and I have been cleaning my house and yard (working and not making money), and I have been writing. So, mea culpa, I have been too busy/preoccupied to post on here.

But tonight I received word that Great Minds Think Aloud Literary Community & Independent Publishing will be releasing an interesting book on April 21.

"The Necro Device" by M.T. Dismuke is the story of a machine that was never meant to be built and the people who must learn its secrets and determine its purpose.

It sounds really good, and I hope to get a review copy soon so I can give you all the skinny. Stay tuned, and come back tomorrow for an update on my own current projects....

I just got the most AMAZING review of my short story collection "Disfigured". You can check out the review here:
Disfigured can be found here at Goodreads or at Smashwords.com, where you can download it in any of the e-reader formats currently available, if you so desire.

I've been working very hard the last few days - yes, even Easter Sunday... cleaning the yard, cleaning out my truck, catching up on dishes, and getting some writing done on the Fortune Cookie story, not to mention continuing the editing on my new version of Vengeance Reincarnate and making plans/shopping lists for a new shed to be built at my mother's place in Globe in the near future.

And I don't expect that trend to end anytime soon, but I will make an effort to do better with my blog posts, for those of you who await them with breathless anticipation LOLOL.

But for tonight I just wanted to spread the word that I FINALLY got an awesome review of my work and I'm fit to pop! :)

April 3, 2012

A friend from my writer's workshop interviewed me for her blog, and here is the link:

While you are there reading about me, check out Sharon's website. It's full of relevance to my interests, and you may find that is true for you also.

Working on the next section of the story I mentioned last night. At this rate I'll have it done by the end of the week.

I have not heard back from Weird Tales about the story I sent them, which is not unusual for me. Despite the fact that my stories are - in the objective opinions of those who have read them - quite good, I rarely receive any word back for magazines to which I submit. I usually assume it's "not right for the magazine", but it would be nice to get at least an acknowledgement that the story was received.
Rant ends--

Anyway, I'm off to bed so go read my interview {*~*}.

April 2, 2012

Tonight's entry will be short, though not as short as last night's.

I awoke this morning with an Idea, and tonight I wrote two and a half pages of When Good Fortunes Go Bad. (The title is a work in progress itself....) Would have got more pages done, but I felt this story wanted to be different from my usual flash fiction - like the character and his circumstances could not be satisfactorily explored in a mere two or three pages - and I really wanted to get the tone right, so I wrote slow for a change. So, the Easter horror story I mentioned on March 29 is on the back burner for now.
This Wednesday's workshop story is a revision of a story currently posted on Smashwords - and here - so I will have a good ten days to finish Good Fortune, and to come up with a better title.

Great Minds Think Aloud is hosting a series of giveaways in the month of April. To access these giveaways, including specific dates and titles, go here: http://www.greatmindsliterarycommunit...

This is the same company that published The Spirit Archer, which I reviewed here on March 8, 2012, and the other titles I saw available in the giveaway seemed very interesting. I encourage all my readers to go get some books.

Happy Reading!

March 30, 2012

Didn't win the Mega Millions jackpot tonight, but whoever did owes me a dollar. After all, I bought a losing ticket, which means I donated a dollar to their jackpot.

My only writing related news tonight is that I intend to go to bed early. The last few nights I have been unable to fall asleep until well past midnight, but I have had to get up early for work and I've been operating on four or five hours a night. Today I was exhausted.

And yes, I am aware that this post makes little sense {*~*}. I'll make it up to y'all tomorrow....

March 29, 2012

... but I do love eating, especially when I'm hungry. And since I can't get food without money, and my only source of money currently is from working....
So that's what I've been doing the last few days instead of blogging - or writing anything else for that matter.
I did manage to attend this weeks writer's workshop yesterday with a story I wrote a couple of weeks ago. It was a great hit with everyone, only receiving four comments from a group of 18. Of course those comments came from just two of the group, but I consider the silent applause from the majority to be a good sign. Before going to bed last night, I submitted the story to WeirdTales magazine. It is a weird tale, but not of the type they usually publish so it may not sell. If not, I'll post it on Smashwords.
I had an idea tonight while doing laundry for an Easter horror story. Unfortunately, even if I can get it done by this Easter I doubt I could get it published in time. There's always next year though....
