About this author

Sam-Ellen has always been a reader and a writer, but it was the children’s classics she read at Uni that inspired her to create worlds as brilliant as those she read about.

She has worked in education and as a children’s bookseller, and has both published and won prizes for her short stories. Sam-Ellen grew up in Tasmania but now lives in Melbourne.

A few of her favourite things include theatre, folklore, travel and cabbage patch dolls. She is determined one day all these things will find their way into her books. What the Raven Saw is her first novel for children. The raven in question stole many of her best lines.

Author news

I will have some exciting news soon about my next writing project. Stay tuned!

Also here is the link to a really beautiful review by Vicki Stanton, writing for Buzz Words. I love this review because she really seems to understand the raven and what I hoped to convey when I wrote the book. Thank you Vicki for your beautiful words. Link here: Buzz Words Review

Wow. I think this is a great YA series that exists very comfortably being a strange mish-mash of horror, action and dystopian fiction. There are some genuinely frightening ideas and creepy goings on in the Furnace series, but the books are also cleve...more

Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1)

On a surface level I enjoyed Wither but there were parts of me that remained stubbornly incredulous and even a little bit derisive at times. This is a dystopian YA novel so I’m willing to suspend disbelief but I do feel a little bit of extra work on...more

Fire in the Sea
by Myke Bartlett (Goodreads Author)

Fire in the Sea is an exciting mish-mash of ideas – Greek god mythology, adventure quest, time travel, drowned city dystopia, contemporary coming-of-age story. It is exciting to me that an author can make a story like this and set it in a very recogn...more

A Month with April-May
by Edyth Bulbring
read in February, 2013
April-May is a bit offbeat, always honest and altogether quite charming. I love the snappy way this book is written and the wry observations. It is probably nothing we haven't all read before, but there was just a bit of extra dazzle about it, and th...more
The Thirteen Treasures by Michelle Harrison
The Thirteen Treasures (Thirteen Treasures, #1)
by Michelle Harrison (Goodreads Author)
read in February, 2012
The Thirteen Treasures is a charming, fast-paced adventure story concerning one of my favourite fictional subjects: faeries. It won the Waterstone’s Childen’s Book Prize a few years back but has been off my radar until now – I don’t think it really t...more

Some birds are made for greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them. The raven was of both kinds, which meant that his capacity for greatness was huge. Despite reassuring himself of this, the nerves in his stomach were relentless. Every...
