About this author

A busy wife and mother of three (2 daughters and the family dog), Donna Alward believes hers is the best job in the world: a combination of stay-at-home mom and romance novelist.

An avid reader since childhood, Donna always made up her own stories. She completed her Arts Degree in English Literature in 1994, but it wasn't until 2001 that she penned her first full-length novel, and found herself hooked on writing romance. In 2006 she sold her first manuscript.

Donna loves being back on the East Coast of Canada after nearly 12 years in Alberta where her Harlequin career began, writing about cowboys and the west. Donna's debut Romance, Hired by the Cowboy, was awarded the Booksellers Best Award in 2008 for Best Traditional Romance.

But when the writing is slow, and I'm feeling like I'm spinning my wheels, it's usually because of one of two things. First, I've taken a wrong turn in the story, and I need to step back and see what I did wrong. There are a whole bunch of techniques I draw on to try to jumpstart a slow bit. The other thing that stalls me is usually an empty creative well. It really pays to take a few days to step back away from work and do something I love. Spend a few days outside, have a movie marathon, whatever. But time off is important so that I can fill up creatively again. A nearly empty well means the words come at a trickle, know what I mean? Do I have to list just one? How about three?

1) no commute, working in yoga pants or (gasp!) PJs.
2) the ability to make my own schedule
3) I get to make up stuff and then finish with a happy ending. There's nothing better than that!(less)

I’m a very visual person. I see scenes in my head. I prefer to listen to television shows or movies on my Nano when I’m working out. If I could find a way to do listen to episodes of The Office on my way to work, I’d be golden.

I sometimes wonder if that’s the slant the marketing industry for books needs to take. They do an awesome job with a lot of the contemporary romance covers but for fantas...
