I am a former high school English, Spanish and ESL teacher, a pastor's wife, an adoptive mom, a passionate advocate for widows and orphans in Africa, and, most recently, an author. My first book, "After the Leaves Fall," was released by Tyndale House Publishing in September 2007. The sequel, "Summer Snow," comes out in Spring of 2008. And there are more to come... I have just signed another two-book contract with Tyndale.

I had the pleasure this weekend of sitting at a book signing next to a lovely lady who is both an author and an English professor at a Catholic college. Our e-conversation fresh in my mind, I shared my book with her and explained the controversy over the confirmation scene. She listened intently, and gave a little gasp at my explanation of the bishop blowing on Hailey. “Oh, the impartation of the Holy Spirit. Like Pentecost. Lovely.” I went on to ask her if in her experience she had encountered differences, however subtle, in Catholic congregations and the administration of sacraments. She assured me that every parish, every priest, every Catholic community enjoys their own unique qualities, and told me of a confirmation she attended where the bishop had the entire congregation chanting, “Come, Holy Spirit,” in a rousing benediction over the youth. In the end, I gave her my book and asked her to contact me when she’s finished. I’m eager to know if she is offended or not.

Suffice it to say, I think no matter who my sources were, there would have been variations in the rendering of this story. Even amongst the participants in this discussion we have irregularities: Sydney was confirmed in 7th grade (at the age of 12 or 13, I assume), and yet Carrie says, “Roman Catholics confirm at age 17 (it used to be 13, and a few dioceses still stick with that age, but not many).” In the end, I hope the subtle nuances of individual experience only add to our stories. We love the Lord and we love his church, as did Hailey. Isn’t that the point?

Though I’ve enjoyed the discussion, I’m afraid I won’t likely post again as this can be one of those things that goes round and round and round. Blessings to my Catholic friends and beyond. I appreciate your input and insight, and I hope we find ourselves on common ground more often than not.
