Ms. Klovers has traveled extensively in the United States, Europe, China, India, and Latin America. She's hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, been escorted through a Bolivian prison by a German narco-trafficker, and fished for piranhas in Venezuela. On a dreary afternoon, a white unmarked van careens through the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s gritty industrial powerhouse. All ten of us sit mute, impassive, in thrall to the strange noises coursing through our heavy black headphones—clocks ticking, zippers zipping, streams burbling, roulette wheels spinning.
We are on our way to a light installation at the Capela do Morumbi as part of the Sa... Read more of this blog post »

description: Join the author for a spirited discussion of her latest book, "In the Shadow of the Volcano: One Ex-Intelligence Official's Journey through Slums, Prisons, and Leper Colonies to the Heart of Latin America." She'll share her stories of living and working in an Ecuadorian slum and travelling to some of the most unusual off-the-beaten path destinations. A must for armchair travelers, social justice advocates, or those considering a long-term volunteer assignment in the region!

“You can tell a lot about a country by its prisons. In hippy-dippy Socialist Sweden, rapists and murders (all three of them) while away their days making arts and crafts in what are essentially taxpayer-funded mental health clinics. The Swedes’ theory seems to be that a) anyone who commits such a crime must be crazy and b) with enough art therapy, the individual in question will soon become just another law-abiding, nude-sunbathing pot-smoker. In America, we think people in prison are either the victims of some terrible government conspiracy, the victims of “society”—whatever that means—or heinous evildoers. And if they are heinous enough, we fry them with electricity, unless of course they find Jesus first. The Swedes, in a nutshell, are tolerant and forgiving, verging on the naïve; Americans are religious and vengeful, suspicious of their government, and suckers for tear-jerking tales of redemption.”
