About this author

Heidi Belleau was born and raised in small town NB, Canada. She now lives in the rugged oil-patch frontier of Northern BC with her husband, an Irish ex-pat whose long work hours in the trades leave her plenty of quiet time to write. She has a degree in History from Simon Fraser University with a concentration in British and Irish studies; much of her work centred on popular culture, oral folklore, and sexuality, but she was known to perplex her professors with unironic papers on the historical roots of modern romance novel tropes. (Ask her about Highlanders!) When not writing, you might catch her trying to explain British television to her newborn daughter or standing in line at the local coffee shop, waiting on her caramel macchiato.

I liked the original covers too! (Christian's model is probably one of my favourite stock guys anyone's ever used to depict my characters)

The new covers came down to marketing, essentially. The series seemed to be finding traction outside of the strictly M/M audience, including selling to several libraries in print, but sadly underperforming WITHIN M/M, and to try and work with that and target the new market, my publisher and I were looking for a re-cover that sold the books more as queer YA/NA fiction than as M/M romance, which was why we hired a freelance artist to do more stylistic watercolour covers vs. the original ones with stock models. We also changed other aspects of the book's marketing (ie: got rid of the series logo/branding, tweaked Wallflower's blurb, etc.) The books on the inside are the same, though, other than some new graphics and typesetting.

We absolutely didn't discourage the artist from depicting the main characters on the covers (and our second favourite concepts for Apple Polisher and Wallflower were the character covers she showed us), but the concept we did end up going with across the board for the series was one with objects instead of people, and you're right, that came at the cost of having diverse covers.

You can read more in depth (including thoughts from the artist, Vivian Ng) about the whole process here:

I hope this is a satisfactory answer for you, but I totally understand if it isn't. Thanks for taking the time to ask.(less)

Description: When Cormac's new boyfriend suggests they tell each other the stories of their "first times", he has a hunch it's not a matter of simple curiosity. Nevertheless, he plays along with his own straight faced and honest tale, but the story he hears in return reminds him that sex isn't always as simple as he thinks it should be. Note: Contains explicit sex and descriptions of sexual abuse. Cover image by winnond / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Mating Season by Kari Gregg
"I read this a while back as part of an anthology, and I have to say, as tentacle fics go, it's at the absolute top of my list--it actually made my Best of 2013 list. I also consider it one of Gregg's best works, mostly because the plot is nice and..." Read more of this review »

“One benefit to being late: eating on the run meant Jonah didn’t have to do any agonizing over cafeteria seating. He just grabbed a bagel toasted to go and bustled right past the social minefield of half-empty tables and bacon-and-egg small talk.”
Heidi Belleau, #First Impressions #Second Chances

“But now that he was here, he was happy. It wasn’t an uncomplicated kind of happy, but still. Something about the warm atmosphere, the way Cormac’s family teased him the same as they teased each other, fussed over him and brought him drinks, included him seamlessly in their conversation, just…recognized him.”
Heidi Belleau, The Druid Stone

“For Cormac, every touch was shadowed by regret and anger and desperation, although he tried not to show it. Sean was being so clear, so brave. Doing the right thing because it was the right thing because it was the right thing to do, like he always did and always would do. Cormac could learn a lot from him.”
Heidi Belleau, The Druid Stone

“I have written it before and am not ashamed to write it again. Without Wodehouse I am not sure that I would be a tenth of what I am today -- whatever that may be. In my teenage years, his writings awoke me to the possibilities of language. His rhythms, tropes, tricks and mannerisms are deep within me.
But more than that, he taught me something about good nature. It is enough to be benign, to be gentle, to be funny, to be kind.”
Stephen Fry

“I agree that it's a shame some books have to suffer ratings that clearly are invalid. However I can't think of a way to prevent it, and I didn't see any ideas in the thread either (I did skim though).

I hope you'll appreciate that if we just start deleting ratings whenever we feel like it, that we've gone down a censorship road that doesn't take us to a good place.”
