Anne Schroeder describes herself as a calorically-challenged Aphrodite with an unmistakable fervor for life. Second of seven children, she was born in Ventura County, California, the subject of her first memoir, BRANCHES ON THE CONEJO: Leaving the Soil after Five Generations.

In 1971 she graduated from Cal Poly, SLO, with a husband, toddler and part-time job, in the first wave of the Social and Sexual Revolution. Her memoir ORDINARY APHRODITE is an adventure tale about a life of small steps in the Boomer women's experience. Her fiction and memoir have won numerous awards.

If I can't write I drag myself down to a bench in town and people watch, or take a yellow tablet to a cafe and write free-flow images onto the page. Building a writing brain is like building any muscle--it takes constant effort but it has to be fun or we won't do it.

I've had 14 women tell me they either stopped their divorce or returned to their ex husband after reading my memoir, Ordinary Aphrodite. That's the best feeling ever! (less)

Winter brought its usual dilemma. The months dragged while I sat at the computer thinking about what I would cook for dinner. Normally I succumb to my “Oregon Five,” the five pounds I manage to gain while sunlight is absent and I’m sitting in a funk.
But this year I challenged myself to accomplish what I anticipated would be a grueling bootcamp, six-week stint of semi-starvation, an HCG diet wit... Read more of this blog post »

Ordinary Aphrodite (Biographies & Memoirs)
1 chapters   —   updated Mar 29, 2010 04:36PM
Description: In writing this memoir, I wanted to write for the universal "we"--the girls who came of age at the start of the Social and Sexual Revolution. Many of us have created Big Lives simply through the steadniness of our million small steps. We had no mentors; if we maneuvered the minefields we became mentors for the girls who came after us--our sisters and their friends. The charm of this book is that I remind us all how new and uncertain the journey was, and how we managed humor and grace under fire. I invite you to revisit the boomer years. Have a good laugh, a good cry. I hope you enjoy my book. I wrote it for all of us.
