There are deadlines looming! Seriously! I may sit in front of the monitor and scream and pull my hair, but there's no time for delay. When people talk about writer's block, I'm sure it's just an element of fear, that editor in our head that tells us we can't do this. What I do? I just keep writing, even if I'm sure it's absolute drivel. Sometimes it is, and has to be deleted, but sometimes, I manage to get out of my own way, and something good gets on the page. I'll read it later and I won't cringe. (less)

When I'm truly in the middle of things and trying to work out the plot and the details and the emotional states of all the characters, that world feels more real to me than my day to day reality. The second best thing is finishing the last of the revisions and feeling like it's done! Of course, there is the editor and/or the copy editor to let you know what needs more polishing or explaining, but at least the story is complete. What is absolutely, amazingly wonderful is when someone sends an email or a FB message to tell you they enjoyed your book. You know you've made someone laugh or cry or intrigued them and entertained them! It's so rewarding!(less)

I’ve been tagged for the Sisters in Crime SinC Up – September Blog Hop by Laurie Stevens, author of the fantastic Gabriel McRay thriller series — The Dark Before Dawn and Deep into Dusk. Can’t wait for her next book!

The question that caught my eye on the Sisters in Crime list was “What books are on your nightstand right now?” Okay, I thought, that’s easy. I like that question. Then I hesitated...

I absolutely loved this story. The author has a terrific style and turn of phrase. The exploits of disgraced detective Beltran are dark and funny and gritty. Don't miss this (now nominated for an Anthony) short story.
