It is so refreshing to read a book like this. Most insomnia-themed books are horrifyingly perky, and full of the useless advice that all sufferers have found long ago on the internet, i.e. drink a warm milky drink and try leaving your window open (or ...more

"I adore this little chapbook. It's been nominated for the Elgin Award and I'll be reviewing it in Star*Line and Amazing Stories in the fullness of time. "

This SF novel is really four novelettes stuck together, and if the third one hadn't been so irritating, the book would have got five stars.

This doesn't do what it says on the tin. There's a brief history of cosmetics - use of kohl in Egypt, white lead in Tudor times, etc, and then some recipes that have nothing to do with cosmetics but are mainly cleansers, moisturisers etc.

Those expecting strict 5-7-5 throughout, season words etc probably shouldn't buy this - or rather, they should buy it, just to see how powerful and charged contemporary haiku can be. I can't share much of the best work in this collection, as many of ...more

Letters to my Fanny by Cherry Healey

I'll start with the negatives: this book is not a series of letters to the author's fanny, or anybody's. It's been called that because it's commercial, which is cynical. Each chapter starts with Cherry's short letter to a body part - in one case only ...more

This was a lot of fun - even if I'd rather have read the story of the poker-playing older sister.
I don't usually like romance, as some of the tropes drive me up the wall - such as the hero and heroine being able to sort out all their problems in five

Louisa the Poisoner by Tanith Lee
Louisa the Poisoner

Grim and refreshingly weird, this is another example of Lee's originality. Out from a swamp life of cruelty and bad smells, Louisa makes her way in the respectable world - and does very well, being unencumbered by morals. Dark, twisted, and fun.
