About this author

Brooke Johnson is the author of The Clockwork Giant (2011) and Le Theatre Mecanique (2013), part of the Chroniker City books, a steampunk series for young adults. She is currently working on a new, young adult fantasy set in a world based on Ancient Persia, titled The Wizard's Heart, due to release Fall 2013.

She lives in Northwest Arkansas with her husband and dog. When she grows up, she wants to be a time traveler, a deep space explorer, a renowned bard, and of course, a wizard.

You can find more information about her books and where to buy them on her website.

Now that the Chroniker City novella Le Theatre Mecanique is out for the world to enjoy, I’ve turned my attention to other projects: the Persian-inspired fantasy, The Wizard’s Heart, and the second book in the Chroniker City trilogy, The Guild Conspiracy.

My priority right now is finishing the third draft of The Wizard’s Heart, a structured rewrite under the supervision of my editor Rebecca Blai... Read more of this blog post »

The Clockwork Giant (Chronker City #1) (Science Fiction & Fantasy)
1 chapters   —   updated Apr 11, 2013 03:49pm
Description: In an age of science, even the most unlikely engineer can change the world. Chroniker City, 1881 Petra Wade, self-taught clockwork engineer, wants nothing more than to become a certified member of the Guild, an impossible career for an impoverished shop girl. Still, she refuses to give up, willing to do anything to work in the Guild’s exclusive workshops. When she meets Emmerich Goss, she finally finds the opportunity she’s been searching for. Newly recruited into the Guild, Emmerich needs help designing a new power system for a top-secret, Guild-sanctioned automaton, and he is convinced that only Petra can help him. But if her involvement on the project is discovered, Emmerich will be marked for treason, and Petra will only be so lucky. Working in secret, together they build the clockwork giant, but as the deadline for its completion nears, Petra discovers a sinister conspiracy from within the Guild council… Their automaton is only the beginning.

“Brother Cavil:

In all your travels, have you ever seen a star go supernova? ...

I have. I saw a star explode and send out the building blocks of the Universe. Other stars, other planets and eventually other life. A supernova! Creation itself! I was there. I wanted to see it and be part of the moment. And you know how I perceived one of the most glorious events in the universe? With these ridiculous gelatinous orbs in my skull! With eyes designed to perceive only a tiny fraction of the EM spectrum. With ears designed only to hear vibrations in the air. ...

I don't want to be human! I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear X-rays! And I want to - I want to smell dark matter! Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I can't even express these things properly because I have to - I have to conceptualize complex ideas in this stupid limiting spoken language! But I know I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws! And feel the wind of a supernova flowing over me! I'm a machine! And I can know much more! I can experience so much more. But I'm trapped in this absurd body! And why? Because my five creators thought that God wanted it that way!”

“For children love is a feeling; for adults, it is a decision. Children wait to learn if their love is true by seeing how long it lasts; adults make their love true by never wavering from their commitment.”

J.R.R. Tolkien
“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“I think we ought to live happily ever after.”
Diana Wynne Jones, Howl's Moving Castle

J.R.R. Tolkien
“The future, good or ill, was not forgotten, but ceased to have any power over the present. Health and hope grew strong in them, and they were content with each good day as it came, taking pleasure in every meal, and in every word and song.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
