Francene's Recent Updates

The Accidental by Ali Smith
" Such a title, of course, can only signal that there's very little, if anything, accidental about this book. It is that rare thing, a modern modernist novel, consciously post-Joycean in its deployment of juxtaposed stream-of-consciousness narrative... "

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald
" Benjamin Button was born in the usual way just before the outbreak of the Civil War. And yet he was not at all the usual baby. Instead of the frantic cries and cherub cheeks you would expect to find in the hospital nursery, there sat an old man, w... "

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald
" "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is a fantastic story about the possibility of something ordinary becoming extraordinary.

Through the beautifully constructed prose of F. Scott Fitzgerald, we are told the story of the young Benjamin Button, who... "

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald
I was looking for a Fitzgerald fix after finishing The Great Gatsby and I loved this quirky, absurdist little story. First and foremost it's a satire. Looking at the reviews I suspect a lot of people missed this. Fitzgerald lampoons Benjamin's respec...more

William Shakespeare
“Love is the greatest of dreams, yet the worst of nightmares.”
William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare
“I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but I see you are unarmed!”
William Shakespeare

Diane Setterfield
“People disappear when they die. Their voice, their laughter, the warmth of their breath. Their flesh. Eventually their bones. All living memory of them ceases. This is both dreadful and natural. Yet for some there is an exception to this annihilation. For in the books they write they continue to exist. We can rediscover them. Their humor, their tone of voice, their moods. Through the written word they can anger you or make you happy. They can comfort you. They can perplex you. They can alter you. All this, even though they are dead. Like flies in amber, like corpses frozen in the ice, that which according to the laws of nature should pass away is, by the miracle of ink on paper, preserved. It is a kind of magic.”
Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale

Jane Austen
“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! -- When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Alan Bennett
“One has met and indeed entertained many visiting heads of state, some of them unspeakable crooks and blackguards....One has given one's white-gloved hand to hands that were steeped in blood and conversed politely with men who have personally slaughtered children. One has waded through excrement and gore....Sometimes one has felt like a scented candle, sent in to perfume a regime, or aerate a policy, monarchy these days just a government-issue deoderant.”
Alan Bennett
