About this author

Gabriel García Marquez once said that the writer's problem was not the reach of the imagination, it was making our lives believable. So true. Let's just say it's been a great ride so far, for a southern cross: Florida born, Paris based, historian, lecturer, writer, reader.

So I dove into writing historical fiction and I'm having a whole lot of fun. The framework of the subject's life is there, and the events he experienced, and then I fill in the rest. It's medieval France, but I'm writing in more or less modern language because otherwise it would be annoying to read. The parallels with our world are particularly amusing (or tragic, as the case may be): the French-German battle at Verdun, 984; monks writing on wax tablets they could then wipe clean, political manipulation by leaders professing the public interest. I'm using some extant historical sources for the 10th-11th century, and reading historians' arguments about society then (medievalists seem to be a particularly contentious lot!). And then applying a strong dose of imagination, personal experience and observation. Fifty pages in, hoping to finish a first draft by December.(less)

I woke up this morning missing the characters from The Road Home. As though we had met at a honky-tonk at some backroads junction and had a great time and now they've moved on down the road, leaving me behind. That's how finely drawn they were, how d...more
