Phil Church was born in Hertfordshire. He went to university in Nottingham and studied archaeology, after which he worked as a field archaeologist for three years. He has done various other jobs such as working in a bookshop and proofreading. He currently teaches secondary English near Cambridge. Thrift is his first book.
