About this author

I'm an award-winning author of Children's/YA books and former journalist with a passion for stories about people facing great adversity with courage. Writing such stories has shown me that in our darkest moments we have the opportunity to discover our true identity and follow an inner compass toward the greater good.

Both my fiction and non-fiction titles feature little-known true stories of history based on thorough research. Most include an author's note, bibliography and further resources, but they are not dry, scholarly tomes! Confronting grief, adversity and failure in my own life, enables me to write stories with an authentic emotional core.

My books have been named Notable Social Studies Book for Young People, SPUR Award for Best Juven

PictureElzbieta Ficowska Life has a way of coming full circle, sometimes in what seems a miraculous way. Take the case of Elzbieta Ficowska, an employee at a nursing home in Warsaw, Poland.

You might call Elzbieta’s entire life a miracle. She was born Jewish in Nazis-occupied Poland. In hindsight, we know her chance of survival was statistically zero.

The Nazi’s forced Warsaw’s Jews, 400,000 people, nea... Read more of this blog post »

Through a stroke of luck, I heard Anthony Doerr read the first few short chapters of ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE at a literary festival in Spokane last year. I was hooked by the specificity and beauty of his writing, and the tension of the story.

THE WORLD WAR TWO...: Women in the Armed Services 37 92 Nov 19, 2013 01:07PM
Kazuo Ishiguro
“I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it's just too much. The current's too strong. They've got to let go, drift apart. That's how it is with us. It's a shame, Kath, because we've loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can't stay together forever.”
Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go

Mary Farrell Hi Matt,

I noticed you have read:
The Battle of Lake Erie (North Star Book)
by F. van Wyck Mason

I was told it was a book for children published in 1960.
Do you remember much about it?
I am a children's author writing a book on this topic and trying to find out what other books have been written prior to this. I have only been able to find this one written specifically for children, though at 180-pages, I'm assuming it is for older children. I have not seen the book myself.
Thank you.
Mary
