INTRODUCTION TO PART 5
The Solar Empire saw its dominance of the Sol star system crumbling under the onslaught of the Earth Federal Republic forces during the initial years of the 1st Interplanetary War. Lady-chairman Isabeau Furrier viewed the development of the ironclad fleet as too-little, too-late to save the Solar Empire due to the fact that the ironclads were a throwback to the battle doctrines of the Great War era. She understood that newer, more advanced types of spacecraft would be required to deal with the EFR.
Thus began the initial research and development of what would become known as the "Cosmo Navy" type of military spacecraft.
Furrier's designers looked through all of the spacecraft types that had been developed in the 2060s during the "cat-and-mouse" conflicts between the USSN and UNSC. This intelligence data was later coupled with the information garnered from both Lady Furrier's spies pilfering Dalltan's secret research files, and initial reports after the Battle of Hygeia when Zhukov's forces first used the alien warships.

The Byzantine class is chosen to lead the pack
Admiral Kolchak's space frigate was picked by yet another team of warship engineers as the best fit for the main corvette of the new Solar Empire fleet Lady Furrier had charged them with designing in 2074 AD. The ship had excellent firing arcs, engine placement, and ergonomics. It was for this reason that these craft were given top priority for upgrade and refit to the new stellar warp drive that Lady Furrier's team of spies uncovered during their infiltration of the conspirators' network during the early 2070s.
Unfortunately for Lady Furrier, her plans were thwarted by the base commander of Hildalgo--where these craft were supposed to be built--and the loss of Vesta in January of 2075 (where the omni-hull types were going to be constructed). Dalltan's influence was far reaching and his spies among the Hildalgo top tier of command staff ensured that the fleet of Byzantine class frigates Furrier had ordered designed were never built.

A truly "Omni-hull" spacecraft is born.
Among the vast amount of data deciphered by Dr. Xiang during his three years of studying the Prodono, it was learned that the aliens built spacecraft using a concept he termed Continuous Operation Standardized Modular Omni-hull or COSMO In other words, vessels that were designed to be upgradable for an indefinite period of time (usually thousands of years) and changeable into a variety of configurations to meet the needs of whatever sector of the galaxy they were being constructed in. The most common type of alien craft that fit this description was the Raul-Zhem-Kai class of patrol ship/picket vessel found at the Alpha Centauri Prodono warship depot.
The Raul-Zhem-Kai class found by the UNSC was in actuality a heavily modified version of the original Cosmo Navy type craft built thousands of years before the Raul-Zhem-Kai, but using the same basic modular components at that Prodono ship. The sheer number of different variants possible with that class alone was staggering to Dr. Xiang as he began thumbing through the alien data.
The data based on Xiang's research that Lady Furrier's spies acquired from Dalltan's conspirators, led to the design of three types of omni-hull craft all based on a basic frame.
This frame was designated the 1st generation of Omni-Hull warships. With the basic model being a heavy destroyer type called the HSD-01.
A third class of vessels was added to Furrier's plan in the form of a space battleship that was based entirely on a Raul-Zhem-Kai type variant intended to act as a destroyer/battlegroup leader. This vessel was dubbed the SBB-01 class.
Had the class not been tampered with by Dalltan's henchmen, the design would have been even more formidable than it was. At 50,000 tons displacement, the SBB-01 was the largest manmade warship of its day. Its weapons, vehicle compliment, and armor were all impressive by 1st Interplanetary War standards.
The combination of this class of battleship with its complementary force of warships would have made the Solar Empire unstoppable. It is for this reason that many historians believe that Charles Dalltan ensured that the Solar Empire never got the opportunity to construct these vessels.
With the loss of Vesta in 2075 AD, the Zhukovist rebels were essentially handed the plans to make the omni-hull spacecraft and the SBB-01 space battleship. However, for whatever reason, Dalltan did not allow the plans for the Byzantine class to fall into their possession and thus the full potential of the Cosmo Navy fleet was not reached in the 1st Interplanetary War era.

The "Cosmo Navy" becomes a blueprint for the future
With their fleet of alien warships needed to transport the proletariat from the Sol system to their newly colonized planet Gaea, the Zhukovist rebels needed a new fleet of warships that would help them continue the momentum against the Solar Empire that the EFR had given them after the fall of Venus and the routing of the UNSC from the Earth Sphere.
After Vesta fell into their hands in 2075, the Zhukovists plundered the data banks of the planetoid base for any information on the ironclad ships and Peter Khrushchev's fleet (Ceres Regency space navy). What they found within the files of the former UNSC base amazed them. Blueprints for an entirely new space navy consisting of omni-hull warships and a battleship design heretofore unseen in the Sol system.
Even without the Byzantine class of frigate, the newly formed Union of Solar Republics space navy proved its superiority to the 1st and 2nd generation of Ironclads used by the Solar Empire during the invasion of the Mars Sphere. These craft also showed their parity of power to that of the Ceres Regency's fleet of "Flash Gordon" type vessels during Ceres first attempt to take control of the Saturn sphere from the Jovian forces after the 1st Interplanetary War was over in 2079 AD.
These craft were so successful that plans were started in 2080 AD for a complete upgrade of the fleet that would include the introduction of the Byzantine class back to its rightful place as frigate of the USR Cosmo Navy by 2085.

Conclusion of Part 5
In conclusion it should be noted that this type of spacecraft went on to father a whole lineage of space warships that defended the planets of the Union of Solar Republics and subsequently the Union of Sovereign Solar Republics after the Outer Sphere war of the late 2080s.
The influence of the Cosmo Navy design on other types of warships would become clear in the mid-22nd century as the Earth forces began unifying their space fleets into one coherent body.

INTRODUCTION TO PART 4
When the conspirators within the UN Solar Empire set out to build their new society, they knew that a fleet of warships capable of contending with anything that either the UNSC or the USSN was constructing during the 2060s would be an absolute necessity. It was from this requirement that the shipwrights of the conspirators set out to design and construct what would become the Ceres Regency's space navy.
The designers of the Regency's spacecraft were determined to deviate completely from the UN's Alternative 3 Project space shuttle designs of the 2040s. Spacecraft built in anticipation of war with the Solid State Society were of no use to the conspirators' desire to fight a post-Great War conflict. They needed a fleet that would facilitate the transfer of power quickly and effectively if their coup de tat was to be successful.
They needed craft that were large enough to accommodate legions of battlerobots, while also having both anti-mecha weaponry to defeat UN shuttle craft and spacefighters, and capital ship armaments with enough punch to destroy the UNSC larger craft with ease.
From these requirements came the "Flash Gordon" spacecraft type.

From the Boikii to Richtoven
The introduction of the Boikii class of destroyer by Admiral Kolchak's Venus fleet in 2061 spurred the design team of the conspirators towards a fleet of craft loosely based on that class of vessels. The success of the USSN Saturn class heavy frigate over the UNSC Boikii ships further influenced the conspirators towards a cylindrical hull as it proved to be superior to that of the blocky UN destroyer design when in an atmosphere. The group wanted to be sure that the destroyer fleet they were building would overwhelm both the UN and the USSN fleets rapidly, thus they incorporated the latest beam weapon, engine, armor, and defensive systems of the time (2065 AD).
This made the original 5000 ton destroyer model grow to 8000 tons displacement as more space was needed to accommodate the new system requirements.
The first examples of this new vessel were built in 2065-66 at the Hygeia shipyards of the UNSC without the knowledge of the Solar Empire high command.
The new family of ships was dubbed Richtoven class and put into immediate mass production.

"Flash Gordon" flies again.
The Richtoven class was deemed adequate enough to contend with any escort ship that either the UNSC or USSN could muster. The next task was to create a larger, more powerful craft for use as a command and control vessel. Therefore, starting in 2065 the conspirators' ship development teams began designing a "pocket" battleship concept. The first dozen examples of this new concept craft were built in 2067 and tested using a pair of electromagnetic drives as their main engines. These were stripped off the x-ships for this new class in 2068 after the successful testing of the UN's Type-1 intersection drive unit. The handful of experimental craft were fitted with the new faster-than-light drives in late 2068 with two advanced FTL drive types developed simultaneously by UNOOSA. Six of the x-ships mounted Type-1 intersection drives, and six mounted 1st Generation stellar warp drive units. Neither engine met the expectations of what the conspirators were pushing for in the late 2060s. The discovery of the derelict alien fleet at Alpha Centauri had changed the course of the direction of their plans, and now they viewed FTL capable craft as a top priority. The "pocket" battleship design they had called for in 2065, was now relegated to the status of light cruiser, and demands for a marriage of the two FTL drive concepts became the main goal for the scientists working with them.
From this push by the conspirators the Type-2 intersection drive system was born in late 2068 AD. Immediately, six of the new "pocket" battleships were fitted with a parallel pair of these engines and testing began. The dual drive design was worked out by modifying the "Dr. Xuric" configuration of the Richtoven.
From this design concept the Admiral Graf Spee class was born. Mass production was started as soon as the conspirators gave the green light for the design.
When the first few squadrons of what would become the Ceres space navy were seen by Hygeia Base Commander Peter Khrushchev, he was reported to have remarked: "All glass nose, a cylindrical body, and stabilizer fins, my goodness, Flash Gordon flies again." It is from his thought spoken aloud to the craft's design team that this ship type gets its name.

The "Flash Gordon" type distinguishes itself from other types
With the outbreak of the 1st Interplanetary War in 2070 AD, the conspirators got their first glimpse at what the Earth Federal SpaceNavy was capable of. This sent alarm bells ringing through their ranks as they realized that the "Flash Gordon" types of warships they were building were now wholly inadequate against the might of the EFR. In addition to this, the alien threat had already sparked the start of the development of the Scharnhorst class, but the conspirators wanted ships much larger than the 35,000 ton battlecruiser. Having seen the size and scale of the alien ships, they realized that if the Prodono were still lurking out in the galaxy that any confrontation with them would be totally one-sided in the alien's favor if their space fleet could not meet it with equal force.
From these two threats came a new list of requirements that influenced the design of all "Flash Gordon" style warships from Scharnhorst onwards until the type fell out of favor.
These requirements were for both broadside guns and turret weapons useful against craft under the 30,000 ton limit set by the conspirators as they did not think any Earth power would be able to construct warships larger than that for some time (they projected it would not be until the mid-22nd century). Large scale, nuclear tipped, missile launchers and heavy energy shield generators were to be mounted for use against any alien threat that might present itself. Escape pods were mounted in order to preserve the crew as best they could due to the fact that any alien threat would in all likelihood have numerical superiority. No other stellar nation in the Sol system during the 1st Interplanetary War followed this design path, and thus the Ceres Regency vessels were unique in this combination of weapons, defenses, and overall projected intention of their design.

Conclusion of Part 4
The "Flash Gordon" type of warship pushed the envelope of what was possible with the Type-2 intersection drive and converging beam weapon technology. By using numerous small-power turreted beam weapons strategically placed throughout the hull of a warship, instead of the standard dorsal and ventral emplacements, the Ceres Regency solved the problem of both anti-mecha and close/medium range combat with large spacecraft. This was a direct application of Prodono battle doctrine into existing Earth-based technologies. For the most part, the "Flash Gordon" type of warship was a success for the middle 21th century. However, by the time the 1st Interplanetary War ended the weaknesses of the spacecraft type was rapidly becoming apparent. This was especially true during the last battles of the Ceres Conflict in 2084 AD. The Jovian, Colonial Confederacy, and USR warships outclassed even the largest "Flash Gordon" style warships.
The esthetic of this type of craft did persist with designs far into 22nd century Terran designs, but those designs were part of the amalgamation of Earth type craft that emerged from the planetary era as a whole.

INTRODUCTION TO PART 3
The bulk of the spacecraft used by the UNSC/Solar Empire during the initial phases of the 1st Interplanetary War were based on the Alternative 3 Project space shuttle design of 2040 AD. The craft for this black-ops project had been built in anticipation of conflict with the Solid State Society, and thus were built to facilitate the transfer of key personnel and materials to the fledgling planetoid bases and off-world colonies. Full production of these craft was not begun until after the end of the Asian Pacific Conflict of 2048, after it became clear that the United States of North America was developing a fleet of assault shuttles for use in space.
Thus the vast majority of warships built by the United Nations Space Corps were based on pre-Great War space shuttle and rocket-delivery designs that had been the mainstay of Russian and European space agencies since the 2020s. Instead of working towards building newer designs, the UNSC chose to focus on the upgrade and improvement of existing ones.
The various assault shuttle families of spacecraft (SS-01, CS-01), spacefighter (SF-01), and larger scale transport ships (ST-52/68, PST-69, SHST-49) were all constructed around conventional spaceship ideas and concepts. Most of the scientists and aerospace engineers of pre-impact Earth thought in terms of what was possible in the 20th and early 21st century. Few had considered what could be possible with mid-21st century breakthroughs and even fewer still pondered what the alien technologies unearthed throughout the solar system could provide.
It was under this atmosphere of conventionally proven aeronautical "wisdom" that the UNSC came face-to-face with types of stellar warships that simply defied any pragmatic explanation in their view: the USSN Juno class.

From Great War Era Space Shuttles to "Ironclads"
Having enjoyed near total solar-supremacy after the Earth had been ravaged by the asteroid impact of 2056 AD, the UN Solar Empire fell into a state of complacency fueled by the continued unearthing of alien ruins all over the solar system. The research of the alien data took the highest priority above all other considerations and the resources of the Solar Empire were diverted to support this endeavor, with specific emphasis on finding a way to launch a successful mission to the Alpha Centauri star system.
UNOOSA (United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs) was charged with the development of an advanced spacecraft design in late 2058 AD using the then new, and experimental plasma drive systems.
This saved the agency from extinction due to the massive budget normally given to the UN Space Corps.
Naturally the resource budget for UNOOSA was inflated considerably from where the agency had been only a few years prior (2055), and thus the UNSC budget reduced down to pre-Great War levels.
During the development phase of the new craft, it became clear to the spacecraft engineers of UNOOSA that the maximum speed their new "interstellar shuttle craft" would be able to travel was a meager .09C (9 percent light speed) and thus would require 52.8 years to travel to Alpha Centauri.
When these findings were presented to the Supreme Soviet Council, the project was scrapped. Immediately UNOOSA put forward a new and radical proposal. This new idea was that of an FTL engine designed using the data garnered from Doctor Xiang's findings at Cydonia on Mars, in order to "jump" to Alpha Centauri.
The Supreme Soviet approved the idea and the Intersection Drive project began.
The scrapped ship design that the UNOOSA research team created did capture the attention of the UNSC Venus force commander. This commander was Grand Admiral Kolchak, and in 2059 he requisitioned for the new craft to be modified into what he called an "Ironclad" style of warship. He chose the name because he wanted a fleet of ships that would give him an ironclad guarantee of continued control of the Inner Sphere of Sol.

The USSN "Space Cruiser" influence on Ironclad designs
The first combat between a fleet of UNSC assault shuttles and the new Space Cruiser type warships of the USSN took place in mid-2059 at the UNSC fuel refinery base at the planetoid Midway near Earth's moon Luna. The contest was over in a matter of minutes with a blaze of laser cannon and PHELAC weapons fire from the USSN fleet. The US Space Navy force had slaughtered the UN flotilla that guarded the base with no losses. The loss of manpower and materials in such a small period of time caused a rumble to reverberate throughout the upper echelons of the UN Space Corps. Calls were forwarded to the Solar Empire command on Mars immediately.
UNOOSA protested the militarization of the Inner Sphere since the Great War was over, and managed to successfully convinced the Supreme Soviets to deny the request for the construction of large-scale military spacecraft.
Having seen first hand the reports of the battle, Admiral Kolchak demanded that Supreme Commander Zhukov explain to his superiors the gravity of the situation.
The Admiral correctly surmised that large numbers of shuttles with short-range, moderate armor, and light weaponry were simply no match for full scale warships. Kolchak worried that if the UNSC lagged behind the USSN in the development of such craft, the US Space Navy would be able to take control of the Earth sphere and maintain that control with relatively few vessels.
History proved Kolchak correct when the second battle for Midway in late-2059 ended in a brutal defeat for the UN armada, which in addition to its assault shuttles, had lost four ST-52 transport ships acting as spacecraft carriers.
Admiral Kolchak knew something had to be done.
The Byzantine class (pre-Ironclad Prototype)
With their shuttle fleets being decimated at the battle of the planetoid 'Midway' in 2059 by a force of USSN Juno class and Type-59 type "Space Cruisers", Admiral Kolchak demanded a warship more powerful than the AS-03. He was convinced that the Solar Empire's continued obsession with pouring resources into what he called "flights of interstellar fancy" would allow the USSN to build up a formidable space fleet.
The Supreme Soviet Council was not amused, nor did they appropriate funds to construct the vessels he had deemed an absolute necessity.
He therefore took matters into his own hands and ordered the Venus shipyards at Hidalgo to begin construction of a vessel he dubbed the Byzantine class heavy assault shuttle.
The design incorporated everything the Venus Commander felt would give them the advantage against the USSN fleet. A 3500 ton space frigate scale vessel armed with five 120-megawatt laser cannon turrets mounted in strategic positions allowing any four turrets to fire simultaneously forward, port, starboard, or aft: giving the ship an advantage over the Juno. Three forward mounted Lithgear LG-STL-800 tubes with a total of sixty space torpedoes for close combat and planetary bombardment. A 500-megawatt forward firing PHELAC cannon barbette mounted just below the torpedo tubes, and used for anti-warship/spacestation purposes with emphasis on destroying the Juno. Eight high yield ion engines with a maximum velocity of 304,000 miles per hour, and six nuclear dampener generators that were a knock-off of the USSN version used on the Juno. This combination of weapons, armor, propulsion units, and defense shields made the vessel extremely powerful (for it's time), it also set the standard for all subsequent Ironclad type warships.
Pleased, Admiral Kolchak had the Byzantine class under production by the end of 2059 with an output of twelve vessels per year.
In December of 2059 the USSN attempted to capture a fuel and food supply depot some 350,000 miles on the sun-side of the Earth. The Battle of Roselin station ensued and proved the worth of the Byzantine class when three of these new vessels destroyed the USSN battle group of eight Kentucky class assault shuttles, four Type-59s, and one Juno.
The success of the Byzantine class was short lived as the second battle of Roselin station in early 2060 saw the introduction of the USSN Saturn class heavy frigate. One Byzantine was destroyed and three others damaged before the UNSC flotilla was forced to withdraw and surrender the space station.
When news of this defeat reached Admiral Kolchak, he had the Byzantine design team set to work on a new, and larger design.
The Boikii Class (MARK-I Ironclad)
The first Boikii class ships were completed in mid-2061 and used to provide escort for the convoys of ST-52 transport ships that were constantly plagued by Juno class vessels. US Space Navy fleets were increasingly larger within the Earth sphere and many battle groups were spotted within the Kuper depot mining bases of the inner asteroid field. Numerous engagements had taken place throughout the Inner Sphere, and rumors abounded that the Supreme Soviets were becoming aware of a new type of craft defending their spaceways.
This news troubled the head of UNOOSA, which by 2062 was fully invested in the Intersection Drive project, and had produced a prototype of the engine. The agency feared that Kolchak's unauthorized fleet would soon be viewed as necessary to combat the growing USSN nuisance.
Their fears were unfounded, but nonetheless they used spies to capture video footage of Admiral Kolchak speaking publicly about the need for better living conditions for the proletariat and more economic freedom. Once news of his counter-revolutionary views reached the ears of the Soviet elite, the Admiral was shipped off to the gulag at Deimos and production of both the Boikii and Byzantine class were stopped.
Fate has a way of coming back to haunt people, and this is precisely what took place in 2068 to UNOOSA. Flushed with the success of their new Intersection Drive, and oblivious to the loss of the Earth Sphere, the Supreme Soviets ordered the joint UNSC/UNOOSA team at Alpha Centauri to send back whatever data they found with regard to any alien artifacts found there.
Under secret orders from Supreme Commander Alphonse Zhukov, the UNSC team killed and disposed of the UNOOSA group with them and sent the largest alien warship back to Earth.
In addition, the UNSC tried desperately to recapture the Prodono warship but their fleet of Bizantine, Boikii, and assault shuttles were met by the newly combined EFR and USSN SpaceNavy of Space Cruiser type warships.
The UN defeat was dreadful and as a result the Prodono battleship was lost into the hands of the Earth Federal Republic, and UNOOSA was abolished by Premier Dalltan.
The Harpy Class (MARK-II Ironclad)
The next major development in the Ironclad series of Solar Empire warships was the Harpy class heavy cruiser. This vessel incorporated everything that then Supreme Commander Edric VonStalin envisioned the "Project Ironclad" warships needed to be in order to fight the EFR SpaceNavy. Although the Harpy class was not the first of the Mark-II Ironclads, it was the pinnacle of that generation of Ironclad type spacecraft. It had a purely conventional bulky, block-shaped fuselage, forward mounted bridge section, external aft mounted engine nacelles, and side mounted direct-launch hangars. It's deflector screen generators and armor were typical of the Ironclad type vessels and its weapons were a combination of heavy missile, light torpedo, and medium energy weapons. However, the Harpy also incorporated broadside guns, anti-mecha batteries, and heavy beam cannons. Her sister class of cruiser, the Valkyrie class, also incorporated many of these design features, but not all of them. It lacked the missile weapons and thus was inferior to that of the Harpy class.
The Harpy class served with distinction during the 1st Interplanetary War and it was this success that led the Solar Empire engineers to design what would become a pivotal spacecraft for all types of Terran vessels. That craft being the first Mark-III Ironclad, the Kiev class.

The Prodono Alien Warship Threat
The Kiev Class (MARK-III Ironclad)
When the Zhukovists destroyed the UNSC Vesta Mark-I Ironclad fleet in 2072 using Prodono warships, Edric VonStalin demanded the creation of a spacecraft that could contend with the alien vessels.
Solar Empire commanders had nothing with which to counter the firepower of the alien vessels in their existing fleet, and even the Mark-II Ironclads that were being developed would be hard pressed against not only the alien warships, but the newly upgraded EFSN armada as well.
Calls went out for improved ships as the UNSC found itself being routed from the Jovian planets, and barely holding their foothold on the Earth sphere.
Even with the development of "Project Ironclad" Mark-II vessels in 2072, the need for the "Ironclads" caused the UNSC to produce the vessels as quickly as the Solar Empire industrial sector was able to pump them out.
The 1st generation of Ironclads were already obsolete by the end of the year, and the 2nd generation of "Ironclads" were unlikely to prove to be much of a help against Zhukov's newly acquired forces.
VonStalin gave the Supreme Soviets no choice, he demanded they put forward the resources for an even more powerful line of ships and get the craft into production as quickly as possible.
Multiple avenues were taken to meet this requirement. One such avenue was the development of the 3rd generation of Ironclad vessel the Mark-III, which was later dubbed Kiev class.
This new "Mark-III" or third-generation "Ironclad" warship was essentially a Solar Empire version of a "Space Cruiser" style warship. The 25,000 ton Kiev class space-battleships changed the course of the Earth SpaceNavy's warship design program causing them to scrap the 20,000 ton "Argentina class" spacecraft carrier begun in early 2073. The Kiev also spurred the creation of the Kurita class of space-battleship, and numerous other post war vessels that used Kiev as the genesis of their design.

Conclusion of Part 3
Odd as it may seem, the United States Space Navy was indirectly responsible for the creation of the Solar Empire's Ironclad style of warships. The Juno was the origin of the need for this type of craft and had it not been developed, Admiral Kolchak wouldn't have called for the creation of the first ironclad type vessel to deal with it. Thus, in a round-about way, the Juno was the grandfather of most, if not all, of the modern spacecraft types developed by the Earth powers during the 1st Interplanetary War.

INTRODUCTION TO PART 2
The spacecraft of the Earth Federal Republic were initially designed in 2063 and were in prototype form in 2065 AD. Full production of these craft was not begun until 2068 after it became clear that the UN had developed an FTL drive system.
All three of the initial classes of warships built by the Earth Federal Republic space forces (later renamed SpaceNavy) were based on pre-Great War submarine designs that had been the mainstay of the United States of North America ocean forces and subsequently the Earth Federal Republic as of 2056 AD.

From Great War Era Wet Navy to Earth Federal Forces SpaceNavy
Because the surface of the Earth had been ravaged by the asteroid impact of 2056 AD, and the air choked with dust and debris, only ocean vessels were capable of traversing large distances on the planet. In order to avoid detection, submarines were considered to be the best means of travel on Earth for the last half of the 2050s and the early 2060s.
With resources in short supply, it was not ergonomically feasible for the fledgling EFR to build their new space-fleet from scratch. They needed hulls to use to construct their initial force of spacecraft.
The Earth Federal Republic took full advantage of the their existing fleet of submersible ocean-craft and used the hulls of the three main submarine type vessels that had been the mainstay to traverse the planet during the 12 years of darkness.
It is important to note that each of these three types of submarines influenced the thinking that went into the design and construction of what would ultimately become the "Space Cruiser" style of spacecraft.
The Cousteau Class becomes the Arctic class
Built during the Asian Pacific conflict of the mid-2040s, the Cousteau class of coastal patrol boat served as the model for the destroyer-escorts that the EFF military planners had in mind in 2063 AD. They needed a craft that would be near 1000 tons hydrogen displacement and capable of using the newly developed Tesla-Schauberger Repulsine gravitational control unit. The cylindrical hull of the old Cousteau class was perfect for this gravitational unit and was the only craft of that size that still retained the classic cylindrical shape since the saucer/manta-ray body style had replaced most of the cigar-shaped types during the 2030s.
At 860 tons, the Cousteau was the perfect match for the new 1000 ton Arctic class. The old submarine was armed with ten torpedo launch tubes positioned on the hull in areas similar to that of what the Earth Federal Forces space-warship design team had envisioned for the new Arctic class to have. Thus the Arctic class also mounted "torpedo" tubes in a manner very similar to that of the Cousteau class save for the fact that the space-torpedoes used by the Arctic were larger and thus only six tubes were mounted on the new destroyer escort.
While most of the Cousteau class submarine's hull was heavily modified during its conversion to the Arctic class, the Arctic still retained the cylindrical hull of its predecessor. The method for conversion from Cousteau to Arctic consisted of removing the aft third of the submarine and adding the main engine, trio of secondary engine pods, and moving the bridge section rearward. The gravitational control unit was added during this phase and positioned at the vessel's center of gravity, just forward of the hangar bay unit. The original Cousteau class hangar deck was intended for mini-subs and underwater exosuits and not the considerably larger HSF-01 spacefighter.
This reconfiguration of the Cousteau into the Arctic class set the precedence for the refit of the Typhon and Yucatan class submarines into spacecraft.
The Typhon Class becomes the Colorado Class
The Typhon class was a 4800 ton attack submarine intended for high speed underwater maneuvers and long-range endurance missions. It's hull was an excellent choice for the space-destroyer type of warship the EFF warship design team was looking for. A similar process of conversion to that of the Cousteau/Arctic refit was used on the Typhon/Colorado class upgrade. The last third of the Typhon was removed from the hull and a new "cosmo-drive" section was added to the vessel that contained the main engine, triple cluster of secondary engine pods, and redesigned hangar section. An additional 1200 tons was added to the Typhon hull during the refit. This included the Tesla-Schauberger Repulsine Gravitational unit, as well as all new environmental control systems, electrical power conduits, and a larger fusion--rather than fission--reactor.
The transition from 4800 ton Typhon to 6000 ton Colorado class wasn't that difficult. Both used forward firing torpedo tubes for missiles that were nearly the same diameter, volume, and size. Thus the hard-points of the Typhon allowed for direct replacement of its old ocean torpedo launchers with the space-torpedo weapon systems. However, the top two torpedo tubes had to be removed due to the addition of the nuclear dampeners and other systems. This reduced the torpedo tubes from Typhon's twelve launchers to only ten on the Colorado. ]
During the refit process of the Typhon class, the decision was made to add rail-cannon turrets for ship-to-ship combat and point-defense. These turrets were mounted in strategic positions: one top forward, one bottom forward, one top aft, and one bottom center. This practice of mounting both top and bottom turret batteries would become a staple of "Space Cruiser" style designs for centuries to come.
The Yucatan Class becomes the Anapolis Class
Unlike the Cousteau or the Typhon class before it, the Yucatan was not the ideal match for the 12,000 ton space cruiser that the EFF designers had hoped for. The aft section, bow section, and lack of a hangar bay made the 9600 ton Yucatan less than desirable. However, with no other hulls in the 8000-12,000 ton class available to them, they had no choice but to make the new Anapolis class design fit into the hull of the existing Yucatan submarines they had. Originally Anapolis was meant to be a 12,000 ton battlecruiser, however, the team was unable to stretch the limits of the Yucatan design to the 12,000 ton mark and so scaled back the original space cruiser design to meet the reality of what they had on hand.
Yucatan did offer the designers a great deal of internal volume to work with after the eighteen ICBM silos were removed from the hull amidships. This internal volume allowed for a comfortable placement of the gravitational unit, fusion reactor, internal utilities, new ventilation systems, and the addition of a hangar bay that the original Yucatan lacked. Even with these difficulties, the EFF design team managed to construct an admirable line of warships from an old Great War era ballistic missile submarine.
The Anapolis paved the way for the "maw gun" weapon system that would become a staple of capital ships in the "Space Cruiser" style of cosmo-warships. Originally this weapon was a heavy laser cannon mounted at the bow of the vessel and was intended to act as a long-range artillery weapon against space-stations and fixed positions like planetoid bases. It also solidified the use of turret mounted batteries, much like the ocean ships before it, with ten rail-cannons mounted in turrets with batteries of two cannons each. The Anapolis class was also compact, with a bridge section very close to the hull in the same manner as the Yucatan class before it.

The USSN influence on EFR design
When contact was made between the EFR and the USSN in 2068 the whole line of Earth Federal Forces SpaceNavy warships was immediately put into yet another refit. This time only the weapons and engines were in need of upgrade. The USSN had been fighting in space combat with the UNSC for over a decade prior to their meeting the EFR. They had learned through experience that energy weapons and fusion thrusters were superior to the rail-cannon turrets and ion engines being used by the fledgling space forces of the EFF. If the new Earth Federal Space Navy was to be victorious over the United Nations Space Corps and ultimately the Solar Empire, then their fleet of warships would have to be effective enough to overcome the numerical superiority of their enemy. It was for this reason that the all three of the EFSN warship designs were fitted with laser cannon turrets, and the maw gun of the Anapolis class capital ships was replaced with an electromagnetic particle accelerator cannon over the old laser. These improvements by the USSN on the EFSN fleet gave the EFR the edge during the initial years of the 1st Interplanetary War period. The assault shuttles of the UNSC were wholly inadequate to handle the warships of the EFSN and the "Space Cruiser" style proved its worth.

The UN Space-Battleship Threat
When the EFSN launched its assault on the Solar Empire's asteroid and planetoid bases in 2070, the UNSC was overwhelmed by the size, strength, and firepower of the new "Space Cruiser" style of warships. Solar Empire commanders had nothing with which to counter the new line of EFF vessels in their existing fleet. Calls went out for improved ships as the planetoid bases quickly fell. The UNSC fell back to Mars and Venus before the council finally realized the need for action.
The UNSC had begun development of "Project Ironclad" vessels in 2061, but that project ceased in 2062 AD when the assault shuttle forces proved able enough to fend off the USSN fleet of frigates and corvettes. The need for the "Ironclads" in 2072 caused the UNSC to produce the vessels as quickly as the Solar Empire industrial sector was able to pump them out. None of the 1st or 2nd generation of "Ironclads" proved to be much of a help during the various operations meant to drive back the EFSN. The Anapolis class cruisers, with their heavy forward mounted EMPAC weapons, were able to overcome the cruise missile weaponry of the "Ironclads." Even with their new fleet, the UNSC found itself loosing ground to the ever encroaching Earth SpaceNavy. However, in 2073 a new "Mark-III" or third-generation "Ironclad" warship was introduced that essentially was a Solar Empire version of a "Space Cruiser" style warship. This new vessel was the 25,000 ton Kiev class. Kiev space-battleships nearly changed the course of the entire conflict. Had they been built sooner, and in greater numbers, the war would have almost certainly ended in a stalemate.
The threat of this new space-battleship was so great that the Earth Federal Forces cancelled the 20,000 ton "Argentina class" spacecraft carrier begun in early 2073 to meet EFSN requirements for a craft that could carry larger numbers of HSF-01 spacefighters into combat. With the "Argentina class" put aside the EFF shipwrights got to the task of designing and building a space-battleship that could contend with the Kiev.
It took them five years to complete what would be the culmination of 21st century "Space Cruiser" design theory. The 25,000 ton Kurita class was vastly superior to the Kiev and had weapons with ranges far greater than that of the Solar Empire Mark-III "Ironclad." It's hull was built completely from scratch, but still retained all of the features common to the submarine inspired "Space Cruiser" design. Kurita would spur the development of future "Space Cruiser" types and ultimately the "Space Cruiser" style would be one of only two that would dominate Terran ship designs during much of the 22nd century.

From the three basic submarine based warships came the fourth "true" "Space Cruiser" design in the Kurita class. This evolution from wet-navy to SpaceNavy would continue on through the last half of the 21st century with the warships of the Jovian powers, and others into the future.
