This novel idea led to a lot of frustration, just sitting at my keyboard staring at the computer monitor, and basic dislike of writing. "But how can that be? I should be loving writing," I thought.

Then came the inspiration to instead of just trudging through the murky parts, just to something fun instead. The murky parts will always be there: you can come back later.

So as I'm writing, if I get stuck in a scene that's just not flowing for whatever reason, I just to another scene. And a lot of the time, working on something else gives me the distance I need from a difficult part of a manuscript to be able to come back to it and get it just the way I want it.(less)

It's so easy to find a hundred excuses why you shouldn't be writing, so don't let those get in your way.

I actually have my writing time scheduled into my calendar. As a mother of young children, days can be crazy. But if I have a specific time set aside, it's easier to sit down for at least a few minutes and get that precious writing time in. And all of our schedules are like that--it's hard to find the time. But if you're serious about being a writer, you need to make writing a priority. Stop procrastinating!(less)

“I wear a solar radiation suit. The lights we have over our artificial fields simulate real sunlight, so if I were in there for too long, I’d get a sunburn just like if I was on a beach. I guess up on the Burn (that’s what we call the land) they had something called sunscreen, but then some dermatologist down here designed the solar radiation suits and said they were much more effective protection. Sometimes I want to smack him.”

“He turns to point the knife at Dave. Smitty opens his mouth to speak, but no words come out. Instead his eyes widen in surprise because with a clap of thunder, I blow a hole in his chest.”
