Very interesting world that Sean Quirk has created. I've never imagined anything like his underwater city but I found myself thinking on several occasions....this could be real. I don't think that in fantasy books very often! Usually, they are so outrageous that you know its truly fiction. However, the world that Augie found himself in made me think...I could do that. I could live underwater. haha. Loved it.

The story itself is about a 14 year old boy that is hunted by a water creature that wants a medallion that he's worn around his neck since he was found by his adoptive parents as a baby. Augie is forced to go underwater to be protected by the ocean inhabitants that know how to fight the creature hunting him.

Augie discovers a world of animals and plants and people that he never imagined could exist. With the help of his friends, he solves the mystery of his biological mothers death and his own family history.

This book will appeal to anyone who enjoys a sense of adventure and mystery. If he creates more books in this series based on Grim's Peaks, I think this could eventually be the next Harry Potter.

“There’s a surprise waiting for you just beneath the surface” is an accurate statement for this interesting and wondrous tale. The story line is simple and is an easy read. It’s not overly detailed so your imagination gets a good workout. Quirk wastes no time throwing his readers right into the story, putting together a picture of an amazing undersea world.

Betrayals is narrative and you can really feel the emotions of “Augie” the main character and those of the surrounding characters. Some humor breaks up the tension and seriousness, Quirk never explains how exactly to “milk a whale”. The idea of a Water Arch creating a dry space for people to live in is something I hope to read about in more detail in the upcoming books.

I really enjoyed the magical element and was happy about how it blended with the story and wasn’t overpowering. The description of mythical sea creatures was detailed and sent my mind on an amazing adventure. It left me constantly wanting more.

The Betrayals of Grim’s Peak is not like Harry Potter at all, as it has been said. This book, even though a bit unrealistic can stand up on its own, with the dark twists Quirk slips in at the end. All in all it was an amazing experience full of wonder and great imagination. Id say a very successful start to a series. I look forward to and cannot wait for more.”

I finally figured out why I never had much of an impression about your book. The day I started reading it I wound up in the hospital for a few months. For some reason I forgot I had never finished it.

So I picked it back up tonight and just finished it. Read it all in one sitting. It was GREAT! All of things I love about YA fiction and none that I hate! It was imaginative, unique and beautifully described.

But now I have two problems. One...I'm STARVING! I kept putting off dinner because I didn't want to quit reading. And two...the books over and I want more! Please, please, please tell me you're working on a sequel!

Ever wondered how to train a hippocamp or what an undersea lake filled with dead water must look like?
Now imagine being hurtled about in a carriage drawn by hundreds of unruly fish, or seeing the ocean rippling right at every door and window in your home.
Come get your feet wet and experience the amazing world of Grim's Peak!

A world hidden right under our noses for centuries.
A secret dating back to it's founding fathers that threatens to throw it into chaos.

"It is not very often that I open a book package in my house and set everything else aside, seeing as that I usually already have a pile to review. But when this one came into my hands, let’s just say that the first page ‘had me at hello,’ (not that I ever like using a Tom Cruise reference.) But to be given a young adult title with no vampires, no ‘yearnings’ of love, no thoughts of suicide - I mean, this was not only a great plot with fantastical characters - but it was also a total breath of fresh air.

I am telling you, readers - take a wee bit of Harry Potter, combine it with Peter Pan’s Lost Boys, throw in some Eragon, and infuse all of that with a new author whose imagination has such an appeal that you will want to read every book in this series -and you end up with the world of Grim’s Peak. The carriage called a ‘Sleeker’ is beyond cool; the dead lake in Hel-mir is frightening and creepy; the Water Arch that protects the city, and even the odd foods from Coral Sweets (candy) to the glasses of creamy whale’s milk - there is not one scene that doesn’t bring you into a seriously glorious world that SHOULD be looked at as the next ‘big’ YA fantasy series! This is a truly great read!"

I've read some great books recently, but this one has to be right up at the top of the list of the ones I've enjoyed most. It's very well written, extremely imaginative, and captures your attention from the start, making you eager to read on and learn what will happen next. The characters are well rounded, and the worldbuilding is excellent, making it easy to imagine you're right there in Grim's Peak with Augie as he learns about the new world he's found himself in and attempts to survive.

The Betrayals of Grim's Peak has all the earmarks of a great series - there is a hint of disaster, a hint of romance to come, and a plentiful dollop of mystery and fantasy.
Augie who was found alone as an infant suddenly is pulled from the only family he has ever known in very scary circumstances to find himself being led back into the one thing that scares him the most- the ocean.
He never understood why he had such a deep fear of water and that will all change as he follows his new friend Mira and her kind to an underwater world he never knew existed.
Sean Quirk has done a great job of envisioning a world filled with sea horse/dragon creatures that people use as transportation, vicious wolves, mer people and sea witches. The story moves quickly and you will begin to pick up on Augie's part in what is happening underwater easily. I did find it odd that Augie was able to leave his adoptive parents so easily but I think the story will pick back up with them later.
I know this is listed as a young adult book but I feel it would do well in the older children's market. It has no more violence/romance than Rick Riordan's Lightning Thief series.

A book came out on October 31, 2011 that was SO refreshing to read, I actually set everything else aside to delve into the truly adventurous story, and was reminded of something. In 1998, there certainly was no big ‘cry out’ in the world for a boy whose Aunt and Uncle loathed him enough to make him sleep in a cupboard underneath the stairs, but when you look back over a decade, you can certainly see that Mr. Potter WAS needed to offset a world that constantly talks about war, economic horrors, job deprivation, and other equally hideous subjects. We needed a hero! And we still need them.
Sean Quirk has been kind enough to provide a brand new one! I mean, this book not only offers a great plot with fantastical characters, but it was also invigorating and inspirational to read.

Step aside Dean Koontz, Stephen King and J.K Rowling make room for Sean Quirk, a creative writer whose fertile imagination appears to be on the same wave link as yours. If you are of the Harry Potter generation you will love this one. In his first fantasy, Sean Quirk leads his readers, both the young and the mature, into a colourful and entertaining perspective into what life would be at the bottom of the ocean.

The story centers around a boy named Augie who is adopted after being found floating on the ocean surface after a violent under water explosion. After fourteen years of everyday life, Augie's adopted parents bring him back to the site where he was discovered. One day, while standing at the end of the pier and mesmerized by the churning waves he sees nightmarish creatures that follow him back to the safe haven of his parents. This encounter proves to be his first introduction to the magical world of Grim's Peak. When his parents learn the creatures are harmless and have Augie's safety at heart and want to protect him from a menacing force below, they agree to let their son return to a world that appears to be an important part of his past. There he discovers the secrets tying him to this world, the good and the bad, and the hidden dangers that are shadowing him.

This fantasy is highly imaginative and combines a mix of every weird creature you can think of. The author's vivid descriptions paint a frightening and creepy atmosphere that is so visual I wouldn't be surprise the story will have legs and turn up on a different format and maybe even the big screen someday. The story of course is nonsensical but its great plotting makes it most interesting and intriguing and its fantastic characters make the whole experience refreshing and captivating. Although I am not a die -hard fan of this genre, I nevertheless enjoyed this trip into Mr. Quirk's world
