I like to tell stories. Mostly with hot guys and happily ever afters. They gotta work for it though. No free lunches on my watch.

We don't have assigned summer reading lists here. But if I was a high school teacher -- and everyone should be thankful I'm not -- here's what I'd get the kids to read.

1. Nineteen Eighty-Four. Because it may be the greatest novel ever written. And bonus points would be awarded to the kids who pointed out the irony of being forced to read it.

2. Jasper Jones. One of my favourite Aussie YA books.

3. Deadly, Unna? Another great Aussie YA book. It has a lot of football in it, so boys can bring themselves to read it. But then it sneakily puts other things in behind the football, forcing boys to think about Issues.

4. All Quiet on the Western Front. One of the most brilliant novels of war ever written. Both banal and terrifying, and heartbreaking.

5. Stardust by Neil Gaiman. So that after reading All Quiet on the Western Front they remember how to smile again.

I said I'd make a terrible teacher, right? (less)

There is currently no chocolate in my house. *twitch*

I was actually really nervous about writing something set in the American west, because it's so iconic. I think the West is unique in that it was legendary even in its own day -- at the same time as people were out there being cowboys and whatnot, Wild West shows were touring cities, and people were buying millions of cowboy dime novels.

I don't know that I had a particular interest in the west. I can remember being forced to watch Clint Eastwood movies when I was a kid. ("But I'm booooored!") I don't think we even played Cowboys and Indians -- we played Star Wars, thanks very much. To be honest, I found most westerns hackneyed and dull, until Deadwood came out. Now that was a show that showed the west how it really was -- dirty and dangerous and gritty. Which I loved!

I think place is very important. Sometimes it's a character of its own. Certain stories, like Sweetwater, really couldn't be set anywhere else, or at any other time. My other place-centric stuff would be He is Worthy, and Dark Space.

But I'm interested in any stories. All stories. That's why I can't limit myself to contemporary, or historical, or sci-fi. I'll write anything that catches my attention, basically.

(Also, thank you for asking me my first question! It says you asked 6 days ago, but I only found it today!) (less)

More books by Lisa Henry…
As some of you may know, JA Rock and I have been advised by our publisher to change the title of our Mark Cooper versus America sequel, which was called Brandon Mills versus Virginity . Because Amazon would refuse to list it with that title.
When I mentioned this on Goodreads, a few people pointed me towards this book:

Why is this book allowed to use the V-word, but we aren’t? I suspect that i... Read more of this blog post »

I hear you! I feel terrible for those couples whose marriages are now "illegal". Even if they knew this was going to happen, it must be heartbreaking.

I really just don't understand it. Heaps of people marry in courthouses every day. Marriage is NOT a purely religious institution, therefore purely religious definitions shouldn't apply.

It's very disheartening, especially given that surveys show that most people support marriage equality.

message 66: by Pjm12

Pjm12 Lisa, did you see the federal court has overturned the ACT's same-sex marriage law? Gosh, that sucks! More so for me because it turns out people were already expecting it to happen.

And what about all those people who really believed they had been married (for all of four days)?

Pah! I am disgusted right now. It shouldn't feel bad to be Australian. But lately, sometimes I do.
