About this author

I love to read long, well-thought-out reviews (even critical ones), and sometimes I even write them. I'm fond of urban fantasy and some paranormal YA, although I'm also pretty critical of what I see as weaknesses in the genres. I also like to read traditional fantasy, the occasional science fiction novel, classics, and old Regency romances. When I read a new book, I do it obsessively, unless it's an audiobook. Then I'm forced to pace myself.

Despite liking urban fantasy, I'm less excited by vampires and werewolves than by other manifestations of magic in our own world. This shows up in what I write!

My urban fantasy novel, Matchbox Girls, is coming out from Candlemark & Gleam in 2012, and my web serial Nightlights is running on my website...more

From my publisher:

"At long last, we can announce this officially: Candlemark & Gleam will be publishing the next book in the Senyaza Series by Chrysoula Tzavelas, sequel to Matchbox Girls!

When her best friend is pulled into the supernatural underworld, Branwyn isn’t about to sit on the sidelines. Unfortunately, Branwyn is decidedly mortal, and in the supernatural underworld, humans are wea... read more »

I picked this up after I finished Unraveled. This was all right. I quite like the premise of 'boy who is mean to a girl while they are teenagers secretly wants her' and 'mean boy apologizes to girl he was mean to' for Reasons, but Evan spent too much...more

I just don't think Mr. Mieville is for me. Bits of it were interesting but I had a lot of trouble with the trash-eating scene and only made it a bit further with great struggles. I guess I'm just a sensitive blossom.

Terry Pratchett
“I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs, a very endearing sight, I'm sure you'll agree. And even as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged onto a half submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters, who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature's wonders, gentlemen. Mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that is when I first learned about evil. It is built into the very nature of the universe. Every world spins in pain. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior.”
Terry Pratchett

Sarah Rees Brennan
“What the hell is going on?" demanded Kami's dad, advancing with his black eyes snapping. Jared blurted, "My intentions are honourable."
Kami sat up straight in her bed and stared in Jared's direction. "Are you completely crazy?" she wanted to know. "This isn't the eighteenth century. How do you think that's going to help?"
"Well, I mean," Jared said, back against the wall like a cornered animal. "When we're older. I mean-"
"Please shut up," Kami begged.
"I agree with Kami," said Dad. "When you're in an abyss-like hole, quit digging.”

“Kami said, "I want you to go in there and vamp that receptionist."

"What?" Ash said blankly.

"You know," Kami said. "Dazzle her with your charms. Rock her world. Go on."

[...] "What," Ash said, "all of us?"

"Do you want to stand around trying to guess if she likes pretty boys or rough trade?" Jared asked, gesturing lazily from Ash to himself.

"Excuse me, what did you just call yourself?" Ash demanded. "No, wait a second, I don't care. What did you just call me?”
