Ken grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, where childhood in the 1970s involved daily reruns of Lost In Space after school, playing in the woods with his friends until darkness drove them home, and sneaking listens of his best friend's older brother's Aerosmith records.

Books and stories were a constant. Curious George and The Wizard of Oz paved the way, and as soon as he started school, he could be found in the elementary school library, getting his first taste of the macabre with Norman Bridwell's How to Care for Your Monster and Alan Ormsby's Movie Monsters (Monster Make-Up & Monster Shows to put on).
