A native of the South, Brett Talley received a philosophy and history
degree from the University of Alabama before moving to witch-haunted
Massachusetts to attend Harvard Law School. When people ask, Brett
tells them he writes for fortune and glory. But the truth is the
stories in his head simply refuse to stay put. Brett loves every kind
of fiction—from horror to literary to historical to sci-fi—as long as
there are fantastic characters with a compelling purpose. There's
still magic to be found in fiction, the mysterious and the unknown
still beckon there, and the light can always triumph over the
darkness, no matter how black the night may be.

Brett writes when he can, though he spends most of his time working as

I didn't start out thinking this was going to be an allegory for the abortion debate in America, but as I was writing it, I realized I had a kind of unique opportunity to approach the issue without demagoguery. After all, the pro-life camp--with which I have a lot of sympathy--will tell you that innocent life should be protected. Well, what if the unborn child isn't so innocent after all? What then? And the pro-choice people will talk about a woman's body and how only she should decide what happens to it. But what if in doing so she endangers other women? Subjects them to rape and murder? Surely that's not a choice she should be able to make? And I tried to set up the book where I never really answer the question. I think you could take either side and feel queasy about it by the end. I'd be interested to hear what you thought about it.

As for the Stoker, the good thing is that there is no panel that decides who wins. It's voted on by the membership as a whole, with all members able to recommend works and then active authors able to vote for the finalist. The bad thing is that makes it a lot harder to bribe your way to victory!

So the best thing you can do is tell your HWA friends about the book and get them to read it. That's really the biggest obstacle of all. People can only vote for books they know about after all. Or you could join the HWA and recommend it yourself. Supporting memberships are only $20!(less)

Music has a strange power over us. It can alter our emotions, inspire us to buy things we don’t want, cement a love affair between two people. But can it make us kill? Is any song that powerful?

It’s a question poets and writers have been asking since

“I don't understand exactly what's going on, but Goodreads shouldn't be deleting reviews, period. People are smart enough to look at them on their own and make up their mind, and deleting reviews undermines the integrity of the site.”

“Respect is a thing earned, not bought, and a man who lets it be known that he seeks respect will probably never see it bestowed.”
Brett J. Talley, That Which Should Not Be

“The truly dangerous are not men who have lost their ability to reason, but those who retain it while being thoroughly evil, those without remorse or compassion.  No, my friend, it is not reason that separates us from the rest of the animals, it is our moral nature.  It is these creatures — I dare not call them men — that are truly demonic.”
